I sincerely hope that it was 480i, as you would have to frame-rate convert (standards convert) the 25Hz 576i to show in the US, and that would mess up the picture quality a lot more. The BBC know what they are doing, though why they didn't provide a full HD feed is a mystery - probably too expensive.
