Dell to offer two "upscale" HDTVs
Dell announced two new HDTV sets today,
a 50-inch plasma set and a 32-inch LCD set. The large PDP is another
sign that the high-def market can support larger screens. Now we just
need to see if the walls in our entertainment rooms can support them.
The W5001C
has a built-in dual tuners (NTSC and ATSC) and will retail for $3,799.
The 50-inch set will be capable of 1366 x 768 lines of resolution with
an 8,000:1 contrast ratio. The W3201C LCD will list for $1,799 and will also include a built-in tuner. The 32-incher will have the same 1366 x 768 res as it's PDP big brother. Dell hasn't provided many other specs just yet on the LCD set, so it's difficult to say what kind of deal this is. This announcement has me wondering: Is there room in the HDTV market for Dell or should they just stick to computers and other consumer electronics?

Room for Dell? Of course there is! It's become a household name. People trust them. When people think of Dell, they think of quality. Besides, 8000:1 contrast ration sounds kinda juicy to me. This kinda reminds me of HP's release of the monster 1080p DLP. Sound and Vision justed reviewed the set and said that it's got the best DLP picture they've seen so far! They even went as far to say that next to the Qualia 70 incher, it had the best picture, period! Who would have thought that my beloved printer company would become a serious player in the television arena. ...well, Dell appears to be on the verge as well!
Personally i like to see the TV i Buy first, does Dell have Store fronts?
Jeff, I don't know if they will have these sets there, but Dell does have Dell Direct Kiosks at shopping malls throughout the country. I know they have carried their 42-inch set there. Check here for locations: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/kiosk?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
yeah, but whose glass are they using?
One thing Dell tends to be pretty good at is cheap - so if they can bring out cheap displays and push the prices of HDTVs down, that's a good thing.
Dell might have more success in driving prices down across the board than companies like BenQ, Sceptre and Westinghouse since they are a more established brand name (at least here in the USA), and people might trust them more because of that.
But bring on the 1080p Dell!
Gosh! This TV is awesome!
