DirecTV tags LG for MPEG-4 STBs
Not only did LG get selected for the new HDTV set-top-boxes, but
they started production already too. The five-year deal between DirecTV
and LG will provide MPEG-4 receivers with HDCP-HDMI outputs for the most digital compression and copy protection. The new boxes will be
branded as "DirecTV", so don't be on the lookout for LG boxes. The initial boxes as part of this deal will not have DVR functionality, but according to the press release, this "sets the stage for LG Electronics to develop next-generation MPEG-4 HD DVRs (High- Definition Digital Video Recorders) and Home Media Center set-top boxes." Hey Echostar: you are moving Dish Network to MPEG-4, aren't you???

This rocks. As you well know Zenith had a large hand in the ATSC spec. So, naturally they made the best tuners for DTV. LG bought zenith, so now they have the best tuners. They pickup the signal the best and deal with multipath the best. This means you will get the best OTA reception for locals in the box, while us cable people need a seperate box while the must-carry stuff gets hashed out.
Too bad the condo assoc. won't budge or I'd put up a dish.
Cecil, unless you signed something where you waived your rights, its illegal for a condo assoc. to ban satellite dish installation.
Here's a good place to start: http://www.fcc.gov/mb/facts/otard.html
