Pop over to the Sony site and check out the 40" LCD KDL-V40XBR1. Part of the Bravia series, the native resolution of this is 720p. Step up to the WEGA Plasma KDE-42XBR950 and you get 1024x768 resolution. No HDMI either. I could go on, but the only 1080p product I found on the Sony site is the VPL-VW100 which is a front projector with a list price of $10k. But at least you get HDMI, since this seems to be a requirement for the PS3. Don't get me wrong, I love HDMI and my set has it, but there aren't that many 1080p products out there and the affordable ones don't have HDMI. If the true HD era means $10k displays then I can wait. And enjoy the current era now. 1080i is nice, 720p is nice. Less than $1000 for my HD set was nicer.

EdwardA

Comments on Sony boss: "HD Era doesn't start until we're on the market"

Its nice they're thinking about the future, unlike with the PS2. That is actually incorrected (based on a Teamxbox.com interview of one of the head ATI guys). 1080p I do not know of.

BUT, one of the main reasons that MS did not put out an HDMI cable right now, is while there ARE people that use it (some fellow Xbox MVP AV freaks), looking at the general public it is small. They have not ruled out putting one out yet.

Also, another thing that was a big "problem" is the lack of the next gen optical drive. The PS3 has a lot of new technology in it already: Cell processor, Blu-Ray, 2 HDMI cables?!? (a lil skeptic of that...), and of course 1080p. So yeah, now 1080p sounds a lot like a "mine's is bigger than yours" battle but we all know how fast technology advances, so 1080p is more of an investment in the future.

Isewise

Comments on Sony boss: "HD Era doesn't start until we're on the market"

If you look at the past 10 years, you must see how much technology has improved. Have we come to a point where its not going to grow as fast as it has in the past? Most likely, but the ps3 lasting 10 years? Sony is just trying to say 'I have something bigger and better' when 1080p has a long way to go.

While I was standing in the checkout of said Target a lady walked by with a Memorex 'old' CRT with only cable coax in. That right there shows you that our 720p's still have along way to go. Let alone 1080p. So to me Sony is just tooting there horn over something that won't be a factor for another 5 years.

Shawn

Comments on Sony boss: "HD Era doesn't start until we're on the market"

http://www.totalgaming.co.uk/games/story.php?id=614

Here is a link that backs up the statement of the PS3 having an expected 10 year lifespan.

Isewise

Comments on Sony boss: "HD Era doesn't start until we're on the market"

It backs up the *statement.

Ken Kutaragi also has said that if too many cell processors were connected together, they would crash the entire internet.
