I think it is a really bad idea on Sony's part to build a system that is has a optical drive in it that might not even be adopted... basically Sony is using the PS3 to sell Blu-Ray to the masses... that is just dumb... how good is the gaming machine going to be??? So far the biggest hype around the PS3 is the drive... we have already seen with the 360 that we don't need TONS of room to create great games... even the good games still to come will easily fit on a standard DVD... The only thing you need all that space for is FMV and who cares about that in games? The realtime movies created with the games engines themselves don't require a ton of storage... they are just scripts that run in the engine...

Look at the UMD's... how many companies are ever going to make something that uses UMD's? None? So if you buy them for a PSP that is the only thing they will ever play in... there is a danger of that happening with Blu-Ray or HDDVD... why build a machine around something that may not survive past a few months after its release?

Jason

Comments on Playstation 3 price rumors: $599 for Blu-ray movies?

In a previous post I mentioned that I expect the PS3 to be a sub-par Blu-Ray player, like the PS2's poor DVD player (initial units anyway).
If Sony really want's to use the PS3 to leverage the Blu-Ray format as a high-definition video format, they need to stick to one SKU, and make them all video players. Large installed user base means more consumers for your product, which is what the content providers want.
I'm betting this won't happen.
Then again, there's memory stick, umd, beta...

EdwardA

Comments on Playstation 3 price rumors: $599 for Blu-ray movies?

The Blu-Ray player function is the main reason I would consider the PS3. Just got lucky enough to grab an elusive Xbox 360 at a store, so another next-gen game machine is not high on my list for awhile. But with the first Blu-Ray players seemingly destined to list for north of $999, then the PS3 just as a Blu-Ray disc player is attractive at $500 or below.

I think Sony's announcement from the get-go that they would include Blu-Ray in the PS3 is clearly intended to drive adoption of Blu-Ray as THE HD disc format. The PS2 had a similar effect on DVD adoption in Japan almost 6 years ago.

I don't expect Sony to offer two SKUs like MS did with the 360 though, unless... the Blu-Ray movie playing feature really would drive up the cost of the PS3 to more than $500. Then they are going to want to have a SKU at under $400 to attract gamers who could care less about Blu-Ray movies and to offer something on the same price level as the 360. This would split their ultimate installed base somewhat, but as the difference only applies to movie playing, then it won't have the same impact that the two versions of the 360 could.

At this point, with all the rumors flying around fast and furious, and with Sony remaining so very tight-lipped on everything - still no pricing and no set launch date - I think anything could happen.

SteveH

Comments on Playstation 3 price rumors: $599 for Blu-ray movies?

comment spammer
scotmobilesltd@zwallet.com

scotmobilesltd@zwallet.com

Comments on Playstation 3 price rumors: $599 for Blu-ray movies?

I am a comment spammer.

legitsell@yahoo.com

legitsell@yahoo.com

Comments on Playstation 3 price rumors: $599 for Blu-ray movies?

I am a comment spammer.

legitsell@yahoo.com

legitsell@yahoo.com

Comments on Playstation 3 price rumors: $599 for Blu-ray movies?

Canon Ixus 65 Digital Camera
Features
6.0 megapixel resolution
3x optical, 4x digital, 12x total zoom
3.0" LCD screen, 173,000 pixels
Uses Secure Digital (SD) memory
640x480 @30fps video with audio, length limited only by memory size
Direct print mode with compatible PictBridge printers
Dimensions (WxHxD) 90.3 x 56.8 x 20.2mm
Battery life:
- NB-4L Li-ion (included) - 160 images
The 3.0" LCD screen looks incredible, clearly see what you are shooting and what you have shot
60fps video @ 320x240 pixels

What's Included?
Canon IXUS 65 Digital Camera
Wrist Strap WS-600
SD Memory Card SDC-16M
Battery Pack NB-4L
Battery Charger CB-2LV
Digital Camera Solution CD-ROM
AV Cable AVC-DC300
Interface Cable IFC-400PCU
1 year Canon warranty
Product Rating: Outstanding.
