If it happens to be true though, I hope HD-DVD dies a horrible horrible death as quick as possible. I just love this whole 'let's not look to the future' attitude that's been prevailent lately. If it's not compatible THIS SECOND, to hell with anything that comes next, even within a few months. But like the post above said... I doubt it's true. And still, 1080i players are stupid too.

Judge

Comments on Initial HD-DVDs to be 1080i

It's not a dealbreaker, but why do they have to half-ass everything? I settled for a 1080p set that doesn't accept a 1080p signal, but only because I couldn't wait anymore. I'll probably regret it later, but I keep telling myself that it's already a good picture, and that I'll just upgrade to an SED set in a few years anyway. In the meantime, I'll still be able to enjoy a really nice picture from high-def sources.

Another thing I'm going to be unable to wait for is UDI in computers. My computer is dying lately, but I don't want to build myself a new system until Windows Vista is out, along with video cards and monitors that support UDI, but I'm sure I'll have to. Discs are being encoded in 1080p24 for both BluRay and HD-DVD. It's just that some players support 1080p output and others don't. There are also some BluRay players which do NOT support 1080p output, e.g. the Samsung, I believe.

madshi

Comments on Initial HD-DVDs to be 1080i

If its true that the media is only 1080i then its a dealbreaker. I already going to have to re-buy my movies so they are in HD.

I'm not going to do that again to watch it in 1080p when I upgrade to a SED tv down the line. If the player is the limitation then its another story. Won't Blue-ray have some limitation as well?

yo

Comments on Initial HD-DVDs to be 1080i

I don't think this really matters, atleast not now. The reason being I think many people who are intelligent enough to research this whole format war online first will decide that they'll wait until there's a clear winner before purchasing anything. By that point in time, all the HD-DVD discs may be 1080p.

Ben

Comments on Initial HD-DVDs to be 1080i

Most TVs on the market don't even truly support 1080p...and isn't 1080p the same resolution, just a different display format? That's just the resolution; the same way that a DVD isn't recorded at 480p, it's just ripped at 480. The TV/Player determines the output format. Progressive contains more visual information ON-SCREEN, but the source video doesn't contain more data, does it? Am I misunderstanding the technology, here?

WizarDru
