That is to say, what are the chances that basically everyone says "I don't want to buy until there's a clear winner" and thereby neither HD-DVD or Blu-Ray sell much and are forced to unify?
In my opinion, however, it seems that Sony has over-hyped their product, much like they did the PS3. I think since HD-DVD is coming several months before BR, it has a better chance of winning out. Even if Blu-Ray has more capacity (which I think is one of the things they're hyping to some degree), if they can't make use of it then I don't know how much good it will do them now...

Ben

Comments on Indie Blu-Ray factory owner hammers HD-DVD

I agree Ben. Not only is it coming out earlier but its supposed to be cheaper. That man's quote seems like all opinion and no facts.

The highest powered tech isn't always the best. What do you call a format that goes from 8.47 gig(current dvd) to 25 gig? Transitional at best? At least Blue-Ray has a much more positive upside starting at 25/50 gig and then 100 GIG quad-layer discs not too far behind.

BTW, the best product is NOT always the one with the most features. Sometimes, less is more. I'm not even mentionning the PS3 factor.

The ONLY HD-DVD players that will sell are to folks rich enough to buy them over an above there BluRay player purchases. Buy the time the average consumer is in play (sub 200$ players) the war will be over (BluRay wins).

Bob

Comments on Indie Blu-Ray factory owner hammers HD-DVD

I could care less which is better, I just think Sony is too proud and would love to see this fail! C'mon, when's the last time a Sony endorsed format prevailed?
Beta? Minidisc? (Only kidding of course, Sony is a great company, i just don't buy their products)

The real problem is that the local stores won't side with either (not that they could anyway), they just want to move product. So, Joe Sixpack is buying an HDTV, will he spring for a $500 or $1K player (not including PS3, because I don't know the price and not everyone plays games)?

Here's a question how long will it take to get to a sub-200 price? 6 mos? 2 yrs? 7 yrs? Most people who are going to buy will WAIT for the better product come down, or wait for a winner. And depending on how long HD-DVD is available before blue-ray will have a HUGE effect on who wins... and price too!

If I run a movie studio and see the my competitors just released their entire library of movies in HD and are selling the extra DVDs because people are buying them in HD and I am goning to sit around until blu-ray gets released and is affordable? NOOOOO

Convince me the consumer when I go into the store to buy a blu-ray player for twice the price of the HD-DVD player because it has more space that isn't being used... oh and pay a little bit more for each of the discs too... becuase they "can" hold more on them if we had the stuff to put on them...

HD-DVD SHOULD win the next gen video disc format war because it IS better for the consumer who wants HD movies... Blu-Ray could easily have a different market on the PC side with data storage... where the space really matters!!!

Jasons

Comments on Indie Blu-Ray factory owner hammers HD-DVD

Another factor that would pursuade me to either format is copy protection.
