I think since HD-DVD is coming several months before BR, it has a better chance of winning out. BTW, the best product is NOT always the one with the most features. Sometimes, less is more. The ONLY HD-DVD players that will sell are to folks rich enough to buy them over an above there BluRay player purchases. Minidisc? (Only kidding of course, Sony is a great company, i just don't buy their products)

The real problem is that the local stores won't side with either (not that they could anyway), they just want to move product. So, Joe Sixpack is buying an HDTV, will he spring for a $500 or $1K player (not including PS3, because I don't know the price and not everyone plays games)?

Everybody and there mother will be bying HDTV's in 2009 with the analog spectrum going away.
The salespeople are not about to let them walkout the store with an SDTV... + what better add on to an HDTV then a sub 200$ BluRay player?

2006= 1000$
2007= 500$
2008= 300$

-The release factor will have BARELY any effect.
-The price factor will put a dent in Blu-Ray's sales, but a small dent at that. Most people who are going to buy will WAIT for the better product come down, or wait for a winner. (Bad ideas folks... buy Blu-Ray early, ESTABLISH the winner YOURSELF.)

And it's not only Sony supporting this product.

If I run a movie studio and see the my competitors just released their entire library of movies in HD and are selling the extra DVDs because people are buying them in HD and I am goning to sit around until blu-ray gets released and is affordable? NOOOOO

Convince me the consumer when I go into the store to buy a blu-ray player for twice the price of the HD-DVD player because it has more space that isn't being used... oh and pay a little bit more for each of the discs too... becuase they "can" hold more on them if we had the stuff to put on them...

HD-DVD SHOULD win the next gen video disc format war because it IS better for the consumer who wants HD movies...
