With all the
HD-DVD news it is only natural for
there to be a laptop sporting an HD-DVD player. We are of course excited to hear that enjoying HD-DVD won't be limited
to our homes. The Qosmio G30 should be available in April in the US and in Japan, and costs about the same as the G20
which is $2,410. It also
includes a
HDMI port so you can connect it to your HDCP-compliant HDTV. These multimedia laptops are great with their tuner
cards and supporting software, but I'll be more excited when they announce the first HTPC with HD-DVD.
if thats due in april does that mean we will be able watch HD-DVD on winXP(which i'm guessing it comes with) and not require Vista or equivilant apple OS?
That is my understanding, I don't recall Vista ever being a requirement for HD-DVD. Just add a a HD-DVD drive, software and a HDCP compliant video/display card and you are set.
It's been confirmed by no less than the VP of Digital Media at Microsoft that currently, Vista is a requirement, although they're trying to work with 3rd-party companies for an XP solution. It'll still require the HDCP-compliant video card.
Zombieflanders,
Thanks for the info, but do you have a link?
Here's one of the Microsoft employees that's behind the implementation of VC-1 on HD-DVD playback:
"Our HD DVD playback solution will be Vista-only, due to security reasons. Amir [Majidimehr, Corporate Vice President, Windows Digital Media Division] has suggested some routes other vendors could take to get it working on XP."

Any word on if the screen on the laptop will be an HD screen?
