The best explanation of a DVD up-scaler

DVD up-scalers have been everywhere lately. We have done tons of posts about them the last few months and even an in-depth review of one of the newest ones on the market. But they can be confusing. We have located the best explanation of what they do and why they are good. While we are not as excited about them as this author is - he presents it like it is a gift from God - they do work good sometimes. Before you get out your pocket book though, many high-end HDTVs have great scalers built in so you might not see any improvement over your current progressive scan DVD player.

Upscaling DVD players look SIGNIFICANTLY better than standard DVD Players, Even on the top of the range latest generation LCD TV's - regardless of how goo dthe internal scaling is on a TV I have yet to see a DVD Player under $1000 even get close to the image put out by the Oppo.
Sorry, linked article was way too long, I didn't make it till the end.
Yeah, I love my Oppo.
Especially since it upconverts DIVX as well. :)
They do work WELL, yes.
Wait wait.. I thought the native DVD format was 480p! Am I wrong?
BigD - I am sorry to say that, yes, you are wrong. The native resolution of a DVD is 480i.
I'll be curious to hear how well the first generation HD-DVDBlu-ray players handle upconversion compared to the Oppo. My HTPC does an nice job upconverting, but I'd prefer to be able to playback all my DVD's using the HD player only.
