Xbox 360 HD DVD player

Well, we finally have some details about the Xbox 360 HD DVD player. Joystiq/Engadget has great coverage of the Microsoft press conference and snapped a pic of the PowerPoint slide. First, it looks like it is just an external optical drive that connects via USB. Second, it will be out this year just in time for the holidays. The big thing though that everyone wants to know is still missing; the price. We are hoping that it is around the $150 - $200 range but no one knows for sure yet. We will let you know as soon as the price becomes available.

Man this is disappointing, this was the one piece of tech I wanted to price. Oh well, gotta keep on waiting. Halo 3 on Xbox Live... I can't wait to get home now. Damn work, making a living and all that...

I watched the presentation, and IMO, the drive is bigger than I thought, but it's still a good size for something external like this. But it matches the Xbox 360's design a lot better than I thought too. The only downfall is not stating the price. I think once they heard the PS3 pricing details that they decided to not share their price quite yet. As long as it's kept under $200 ($150 or lower being even sweeter), I'm definately going to get one. And I'm sure $200 and under is going to make a lot of people happy for hi-def movies.

MS also is smart about this because if Blu-ray happens to win down the line, MS isn't stuck with an internal drive. All they have to do is release an external Blu-ray drive for movies. But if Sony's Blu-ray loses, they are literally screwed.

Hmm... Ok, so one USB port on the back of the 360 and I already have the wireless adapter hooked up there. Does anyone know if I could use a usb splitter and have them both hooked up at the same time?

I understand that Microsoft is hedging their bets with the external drive, but frankly this is going to look like crap. Where exactly is this supposed to fit into my home theatre setup?

I read somewhere that the HD-DVD Drive acts as a USB hub as well and even has a clip for the wireless adapter. on the back of the drive.
