With 2 HD TV's in my house, each wanting a seperate HD DVR, our options were limited. DirecTV have only the MPEG-2 DVRs, that they wanted over $200 for each. Dish network wanted the same price but would only give us ONE HD-DVR for the entire house (Claiming it could be used for both HD sets, but, doing a lil bit of research I see that the other HD set would only get an SD feed! Useless!).

So, in the end, Cable it was.
No Setup Fees. No "Lease" downpayments. Then DirecTV was way ahead. Now, the cable company is way ahead in terms of HD Programming. Honestly the only thing that has kept me with DirecTV has been the HD Tivo (which only does MPEG2). DirecTV is more interested in get MPEG4 Local HDTV service that most people can get anyway over the air than adding more HD National feeds (like Starz HD). DirecTV has gotten so bad that when the TiVO series 3 comes out I’m switching to Cable or FiOS Digital cable service which is to be up in my area soon. (Already have FiOS internet and loving it.) I would switch now, but I don’t like the cable companies DVR. From what I hear, DirecTV is loosing customers and needs to get their act together on this. We’ve been hearing for years from DirecTV for a multi-room DVR and more HD channels, but so far they have only added TNTHD and ESPN HD and a few other Sports HD items that are seasonal at best. Compared to cable (Cablevision) or FiOS, DirectTV’s current offerings are a joke!!!!

I understand them needing to switch to MPEG4 for greater compression. MPEG4 is superior to MPEG2 in quality and performance. DirecTV has limited bandwidth (especially compared to FiOS), but I think DirecTV’s priorities are mixed up since they could have used the new satellites for more MPEG2 HD Programming and then add local.

Scott S

Comments on Ask HDBeat: Is DIRECTV ever gonna release their MPEG 4 HD DVR?

It's true that the released details on the DirecTV HD media center say that the signal distributed to secondary displays is SD only. TiVo as a brand was an advantage over DishNetwork and the cablecos. But apparently Murdoch doesn't seem to understand that. Nobody is going to switch to DirecTV for a bland DirecTV branded DVR (from NDS) because it doesn't convey any sense of quality whereas "TiVo" envokes that from the public's perspective (whether justified or not). It would be in DirecTV's best interest to give TiVo money to create a TiVo box that did MPEG4 for DirecTV instead of throwing the cash to NDS for the same task but generating an inferior "me too" product. Of course, Murdoch probably would not allow it no matter how reasonable and rational such a decision would be.

The Jeremy

Comments on Ask HDBeat: Is DIRECTV ever gonna release their MPEG 4 HD DVR?

I have the same question as #4 (Kevin) above. I know someone who works for Comcast in my area and he told me that Comcast has just as many problems. Personally I would like to see a marriage between DIRECTV/DISH network because of efficiencies that both companies could take advantage of. Also they are both going to offer WiMAX service in major metropolitian areas. In terms of the Mpeg 4 technology once the additional two satellites go up later this year they will have the capability of putting up to 250 channels in HD. DIRECTV is working on their issues and they will be the HD leader sooner of later. Cable has too much crap running through their pipe (plus they are compessing at about 12 to 1 right now). In my area Comcast has to drop IN HD2 for ESPN 2 (a good choice) but that means that they have bandwidth issues. I think satellite has a lot going for it (also cheaper price, no takes, and all the equipment is leased which is a one time fee so guess what folks if it breaks it is DIRECTV's problem not yours!). With the HD and DVR services from the cable comapanies you pay and additional 10 bucks on top of the 5 dollar fee on every HD-DVR. Under DIRECTV the DVR fee is 5.99 per house and 9.99 for the additional HD package per house. I wish people would actually do a fair comaprison and realize that cable and satellite is an apples to orange comaprison.

DIRECTV guy

Comments on Ask HDBeat: Is DIRECTV ever gonna release their MPEG 4 HD DVR?

I wanted to upgrade to a DirecTV HD Tivo/DVR this fall - looks like I picked a bad time.

Is there any idea how much the new DVR would be if/when it is released? Although it was hard to give up my cable broadband Internet connection when I switched, I like DirecTV on the whole, prefer it to the Cable TV I remember (Cablevision, which was/is horrid), however, the time has come to upgrade the household to HD DVRs and I can't figure out why DirecTV can't get their act together. Their HD offerings are a mess if you want a DVR. We've got two HD TVs both with non-HD DirecTV TIVO boxes. I called DirecTV last December to finally get a HD TIVO box (the old model w/30 hours), and they wanted $700 for one box, a second antenna to receive HD Local, and installation. No thanks! I realize the price has come down for the old box, but everyone is saying just sit tight for the new box. Now I hear that the new box has some major shortcomings and what I REALLY should wait for is the NEW new box. I've just about had it. Everyone in my neighborhood has HD Cable from Comcast, with VOD and DVR capabilities and they love it. They pay the same amount that I do, with ZERO setup fees for HD programming & equipment. Sunday Ticket be damned, I can watch in a bar. It's obvious that I'm going to miss another NFL season without an HD DVR. I hope the NFL realizes that if they sign their next Sunday Ticket contract with Cable instead of DirecTV, this company would remain in business for maybe a week.

JK

Comments on Ask HDBeat: Is DIRECTV ever gonna release their MPEG 4 HD DVR?

CHILL OUT GUYS - LET'S NOT JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS ABOUT THE NEW HR20, IT HAS NOT EVEN BEEN RELEASE YET, HOW CAN WE PREDICT ITS PERFORMANCE!
