Sony's first batch of 1080p flat-panels are
ready for pre-order. These sweet, new Bravia's are all 1080p (yes, they do accept 1080p) and range in size from 40 to 46-inches. There are two different levels of their top-tier products with the XBR2 and XBR3's. The XBR2s are the line that have the custom bezel option where you can change the trim to match
the wife's your decor. The XBR3 has the same LCD panel with the same overall specs (as far as we can tell) but has a different bezel altogether. The LCD has a glossy black trim that is sure to catch everyones eye and every bit of light for some high-quality glare. Both series feature 178 degree viewing via their Wide Color Gamut (WCG) screen, DRC 2.5 processing, 3 HDMI inputs and they even throw in a PC input for ya. The 40 and 46-inch XBR2s are priced at $3,499 and $4,299 respectively while the 40 and 46-inch of the XBR3s are $3,799 and $4,599.
We have got to be honest, we can't wait to see these.
[thanks for the tip Caitlin]
46" too big, 40" too small. Argh! How much difference do you think there is between 42 and 40? Don't say 2 inches!
Hey Mkaz,
Give this online calculator a try:
http://www.cavecreations.com/tv2.cgi
42 vs. a 40 results in about a 10% increase in screen size
James, that was a great tool, thanks a lot

This is some serious compeition for plasmas. 1080p plasmas are extremely expensive atm.
However most people will sit further than 6' back in which case you don't need a 46" or smaller 1080p display. You'll be too far back to see a significant difference between a 720p and 1080p display(read display not signal).
F*cking bastards! The prices when up from the announce MSRPs. I remember when Sony announce these 2-months ago, the 46" XBR2 was going to be $3,999. And the XBR3 $4,499.00. They are pricing them based on design, not performance just like everything they manufacture. TFT LCD prices are going down, yet Sony keeps them up, very nice. They should use some of that money to get better scripts for their movies, which BTW they suck big time.
When they say PC connectivity, do they mean native 1920x1080 resolution?
cut those prices in half and I'll take one.
I just bought the Bravia 46x2000
it's native 1920x1080p resolution from a pc using a dvi to hdmi converter. It's AMAZING. I'm using it as a pc monitor right now. Through vga its a shitty 1366xwhatever.
this is, in my opinion, the best tv in the world right now. Literally - there's not much need for it to get any better. It's Cinema quality.
Either that or I'm trying to justify the amount of money I spent on the thing!
Another reason to wait till the December timeframe to see what happens to LCD vs plasma prices.
@8:
I wouldn't worry about justifying anything to anyone... just enjoy all that 1080p goodness and get ready for the PS3 :)
Are there any reviews online for the European/Japanese versions of this television. While SED might be the "holy grail" for us CRT lovers, an XBR 1080p LCD might just get me off my 34" XBR910 CRT. I'd love to see if this is is a system that finally rivals CRT in terms of picture quality.
