Hockey: Being able to easily follow the puck around the ice is a gigantic improvment over SD.
2. Football: The HD (including surround sound of the feeds) and the widescreen really allow viewers to see a play develop. You can see down field and watch a receiver cutting across the middle instead of the quarterback looking like he is throwing to nobody on an SD feed.
3. Basketball: The gleam off the court and the surround sound of the fans cheering (or jeering) actually makes you feel like you are at the arena. (And note, I actually do care for basketball, but I will watch one is HD because it is beautiful and entertaining)
4. Soccer: If you watched the World Cup this summer, you know what I am talking about.
5. Everything else...

Baseball in HD isn't that great, a majority of the footage is the angle from behind the pitcher. Having a widescreen HD feed of this doesn't do much.

Poker in HD... are you serious? What a waste... wow, look at the gleam of the queen. Or maybe, look how realistic that felt looks... I mean jeez. Maybe if it is celebrity poker and Jessica Alba and Penelope Cruz are all-in on the last hand ;-) Oh yea, give me HD for that one.

Erik

Comments on TV Squad: The five best sports to watch on TV - do these hold true when HD is concered?

1. I'm sure hockey is great too but I'm not a fan so seeing the puck doesn't really matter to me. I found basketball to be somewhat annoying with all the flashes, strobes, and advertisements. It ended up being visual pollution. Golf is nice and baseball is great too. I still can't get over how good World Cup soccer looked though. Wow.

Todd

Comments on TV Squad: The five best sports to watch on TV - do these hold true when HD is concered?

1.football
2.boxing/mma
3.soccer
4.baseball
5.basketball

DeddyLüger

Comments on TV Squad: The five best sports to watch on TV - do these hold true when HD is concered?

Auto Racing is the best in HD!!!

chrisdinges

Comments on TV Squad: The five best sports to watch on TV - do these hold true when HD is concered?

1. Football (US) - I still remember my first high-def game. A pass was underthrown and I could tell that it was short before the play had finished. I really got a better sense of spacing and slightly more depth to the image.
2. Basketball - If and when they use the camera that moves around on wires. Standard "press box" camera shots aren't at all impressive. Moving, up-close, camera angles that show spacing are awesome. If a broadcast isn't using the moving camera, basketball ranks much lower on the list.
3. Hockey - Very easy to follow the puck.
4. Baseball - Simply looks great framed 16x9.
5. Boxing - I've only seen briefly on HBO (free month) and maybe on HDNet. Looked pretty cool seeing the damage in detail.

Wayne
