We just got word from one of our loyal readers, Brian, that he recently spotted RCA's HD DVD player on one of Walmart's clearance racks for $350. A
quick web-search denies this but that doesn't mean it isn't happening. Many large retail stores will put things on clearance once they have sat on the selves a certain amount of time. We plan on doing a little recon work later today
(read: try my best to get my hands on one) and visit a few of the Walmarts in our areas. Remember, the RCA branded HD DVD player is exactly the same as the Toshiba one sans the brand name on the front. It would just make sense to seek one of these players out if you are in the market for an HD DVD player
That is if it is true. Has anyone else seen one of these players on the clearance rack?
[Thanks, Brian]
Wilmart? Minor typo me thinks.
Man, I was just at Wal~Mart this weekend, too. If I would have known, I could have looked. Not that I have the $350 laying around, though!
An HD-DVD player for 350? I would make 350 appear from thin air and get one! Imagine how many MORE movies you could get if you get one of these players compared to a Blu-Ray player? I don't think that it would be possible to buy 650 bucks worth of HD-DVD movies (I'm not sure if they have enough HD-DVD movies out yet to equal that amount). Gunna have to run to Wal-Mart on the way home tonight.
I've got a picture of it I took on my Treo, but it didn't come out very well. I'm trying to decide whether to buy one for myself or not.
Which Walmart!?
doesnt the rca not work with the downloadable toshiba firmwares? i dont remember for sure but i seem to remember it not working on the rca's.
I had thought it did work b/c the only difference was the name on the outside of the unit. I'll have to check out the AVS forums. I'm sure the answer is somewhere on that site.
Hot diggity damn, $350?! I guess I'll be skipping out on my class later on today. I would skip out on work too but I've been putting in extra hours just so I can have more spending money for the summer. I'll report back later *crosses fingers*
Damn, I guess I'll have to forego my visit to the massage parlor and head over to Wallyworld instead after work.
I dropped by a WalMart near work during lunch in Fairfax, VA. Didn't see it on the shelves at any price. Bummer, I probably would have taken the plunge at $350...
I called my local Wal-mart and they told me they had no DVD players of any kind on clearance. I would of certianly got one at that price. Oh well.
Just got back from my local Wal-Mart in Clermont, Florida. The RCA HD DVD was listed at $498.00, the same amount I paid for mine a few weeks ago. Shame. I would have bought another one for the bedroom at that price.
I went to two different Walmart's around me and neither carries HD DVD players. One told me that it was such new technology that I should check back around Christmas. Uh, ok...
Anyone else able to confirm the price at Wal-mart?
It's not on clearance, it's just regular price. Saw it whilst shopping for a VCR (remember that old-fashioned thing?). But yeah, that's the price. Didn't look all that great in person though. I'll just stick with the pics.
I checked the only two walmarts in the college town I live in. One carried the players but they were at regular price, the second location did not have any I could find. Did Brian actually take the player up to the counter and have it ring up at $350 or was he passing the heavy lady on the scooter and "think" he saw it on clearence for $350?
Man I wish these rumors were two over here.
Walmart in Sterling, VA had absolutely zero HD-DVD's -- no sign of them anywhere, movies or players.
