We may see sub-$1000 37-inch LCDs this year

Last year we were saying this about 32-inch models and so this just makes since that we would say it about the bigger 37-inchers this year. DigiTimes is reporting that this just might happen by years end. Part of this comes from the lack of demand that these large LCDs are garnering. Sure, people want 'em but not to the extreme that manufactures had anticipated. We are wonder why this is? Do people not want this sizes, or is it that people don't want this size LCD? We don't know, but have a feeling that some of you might have an idea.Is it the size, price, or LCD technology that people don't want for 37-inch LCD TVs?
Personally a 37" is perfect for my next tv purchase. If that westy comes down to $1000 then I'll try to grab one. My guess for their unpopular state might be that once you break the $1k mark and push beyond $1500 people start wanting a bigger bang for their buck. They'd much rather jump up to the 40s or 50s in screen size. So 37" just sits there in that akward size range.
It is very simple, we want 37'' LCD's.
But $300 32'' CRT vs 1,500 37'' LCD, I will go with the CRT.

Average consumer: "How much more is that?"
IMO a 32" crt is no comparison to a 37
" lcd .

Sharp LC37d90u...1080p huge monitor for gaming/htpc 1950 on bestbuyplasma...also written up on consumer reports as a great TV. I think 37 is a great size for the bedroom/den or as a second HDTV..but I agree with zelig - i will hold out for 40-50 for my main squeeze.
though i already have rearproj lcd sony 55.
I don't think it's really a CRT vs LCD issue. The biggest CRT you're gonna find is a 34" Sony for around $1200.
imo, it's an LCD vs Plasma issue. Why buy an LCD when you can buy a plasma for about the same price? I'ld take a 37" Panasonic plasma over any 37" LCD.
Another thing to consider is that not a lot of big name companies make a 37" LCD. I wish samsung did becasuse the price jump from a 32" to a 40" is a lot in my opinion. A 37" would be ideal for me being that I can't afford a 40" or bigger LCD and at the price you would pay for big screen LCD your better off getting a plasma or DLP.
I agree that right now this is a good size for bedrooms or secondary TVs. Unfortunately whith so many people upgrade their primary TV to HD, the TV being replaced gets relocated to the bedroom/secondary location. That TV is then disposed of. Not that many of us can afford to replace both with new HD sets. Once we get more HD content people will be more likely to go HD through the whole house.

What do people like the least on 37 inch LCD TVs? Size, price, or the technology?
I just bought a 37" LCD at Costco -- Philips PF9431 -- $1699, minus $300 with coupon -- $1399. Put it in my master bedroom. Fantastic picture quality -- built in QAM tuner that picks up all network HD signals from an analog coax cable. Why would a plasma be a better deal ?
I already a sub $1,000 37" lcd, granted it is refurbed, but it seems to be new, no obvious flaws. It's a Philips, with cc, 2 hdmi and a ton of other features, $900 shipped. A friend of mine got the best deal though, a freebie 42" from T-mobile in a world cup giveaway.
Someone mentioned buying a plasma instead of an lcd. Why? I've worked with both in my business and plasmas simply aren't up to par with LCDs. They may be cheaper but that's because they're inferior.
Well costco is going to have a 37" for $999 sometime this month but I just got a flyer from micro center in the mail and I think it had a 37" for $699 after a 200 or 300 rebate. I'd rather have the costco return policy but i hope Costco has them for even lower then $999 before the end of the year....maybe even 42" for less then $1200.

Plasma are definitely superior to LCDs because they have better contrast and black level performance than LCDs, and offer slightly wider viewing angles. They are also cheaper because Plasma displays have been around a little longer than LCDs, and their technology is a little further along.

As far as critical viewing, I definetely believe that at this stage, the plasma provides a better viewing experience for several reasons:
1.) The colors definetely jump out at you more on a plasma. They reproduce colors beautifully.
2.) They offer better black levels and contrast ratio although lcd's are getting better black levels/contrast ratio w/ each new generation.
3.)They do offer a slightely wider viewing angle than lcd's as CyberKnight stated.
I personally own a 50" Pioneer Plasma for my main viewing area, and a 32" Sharp LCD for the Bedroom and a 32" Samsung LCD for the computer/media room. All tv's are calibrated as I am ISF Certified and the best picture out of all is the Plasma. It also has a superior scaler as well for standard def. content although the Sharp is great w/ Standard def via Dish Network too.
