Unofficial HD DVD 2.0 firmware surfaces online
WARNING: this is not the official Toshiba HD DVD 2.0 firmware and HDBeat is not responsible if you download this file and it messes up your precious HD DVD player. The firmware does appear to work however as a few users over at AVS Forum have reported success in now selecting the Dolby TrueHD soundtracks. Unfortunately, those same users are still reporting that they haven't seen an improvement in the picture quality relating to the deep black "blue-crush" issue. User William does point out that TrueHD support isn't the only upgrade with this new firmware as DTS-HD Master is now enabled along with 1080p 24/48/60Hz support, triple layer support and a different or more detailed menu tree is now available - we wish. No 1080p just yet and DTS-HD could be there but there isn't any titles that take advantage of it so there is no way to test it. Keep in mind we are not implying that you should upgrade to this firmware but some people are reporting success by doing so, but if it were our HD DVD player, we would wait till the official firmware update is released.

I wonder if load times are any better, or if anything else that was considered a problem before has now be fixed, or at least altered to work better.
Just to clarify, "User William does point out that TrueHD support isn't the only upgrade with this new firmware as DTS-HD Master is now enabled along with 1080p 24/48/60Hz support, triple layer support and a different or more detailed menu tree is now available." This statement is incorrect. The update simply enables True HD 5.1 and some other minor updates. 1080p & triple layer support it does not.
Wow, HDBeat got suckered, BIG TIME. DTS-HD Master, 1080p support... no, definitely not there. Some fact-checking before posting might be a good idea from time to time.
Things we KNOW this update does and does not do so far (i'm running it right now in front of me so believe me, this is fact):
- Enables TrueHD 5.1 support.
- Enables 720p support WITHOUT quality loss (initial versions of the firmware would downconvert video to 480p, then upconvert it back to 720p resulting in massive quality loss).
- DOES NOT enable DVD-Audio or SACD.
- DOES NOT enable 1080p support in any fashion, at any refresh rate.
- It's NOT CONFIRMED that this enables DTS-HD support, as there are no DTS-HD discs right now. I highly doubt this is accurate though.
- It's NOT CONFIRMED that this enables Triple Layer support, a there are no triple layer discs. I REALLY highly doubt this is accurate though, since triple layer HD-DVD's are not part of the official specification anyways.
Firmware 2.0 is now officially available through ethernet port update from Toshiba. Appears that leaked bootleg is probably the same version as the official release.
