There is plenty of room on the discs that both camps have now and right now the player that costs twice as much is still inferior in video quality... so what if Blu-Ray pulls even with HD-DVD... is it then worth twice the price for the player?

Jason

Comments on Warner Blu-ray releases may switch to VC-1 codec soon

I would rather have H.264 AVC rather than VC-1. The capacity of prestamped HD-DVD disks is limited by the manufacturing process.

If HD-DVD catches on, could they improve the manufacturing process to make a disk that looks like a 50 GB disk to the player? This transition might be as or more difficult as the transition to manufacture Blu-Ray disks, but it would be easier to justify to support a format that already has commercial success.

Toshiba also has demoed a 45 GB triple-layer HD-DVD disk. We'll see if BR can actually show that quality soon. However I doubt many users would have a system that could take advantage of that, much less that they would notice a difference. I'm sure the capacity battle will go back and forth as each camp adds layers. I think we just need to give it time for the price and quality issues to shake out.

apacit

Comments on Warner Blu-ray releases may switch to VC-1 codec soon

Here's the test I'd like to see performed by an independent body:

Suppose we encode a 2-hour movie at 1080p/24fps using VC-1 and/or H.264, but with two different sets of restrictions: (1) we are restricted to the maximum data transfer rate, and total storage capacity, of 2-layer HD-DVD; (2) we are restricted to the max. data transfer rate, and total storage capacity, of 2-layer BD (let's assume equal "typical" audio tracks for the two cases).

Given this, will there be a visible difference in PQ between the two, if we use a very high-quality 1080p display device and sit at a distance of, say, four times the screen height?

Or here's another way to put the question: for a 2-hour movie at 24fps, what's the minimum data transfer rate and storage capacity you need to achieve no visible difference in PQ vs. that from the studio digital master (using the set-up described above) -- and how does this rate and capacity compare to what can be offered by either BD or HD-DVD?

Aron

Comments on Warner Blu-ray releases may switch to VC-1 codec soon

Is the current Blu-Ray player hardware capable of delivering 1080P VC1 decompression, or will it be processor-starved like the Toshiba to a 1080i or 720P only output?

GhostDoggy

Comments on Warner Blu-ray releases may switch to VC-1 codec soon

Ghostdoggy:

Both the Toshiba and the Samsung have the SAME broadcom video decoder....

WiFiSpy

Comments on Warner Blu-ray releases may switch to VC-1 codec soon

Both MPEG-2 and VC-1 are lossy compression.

The best option is to use a lossless codec, such as H.264 High Profile.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_codecs

exodus

Comments on Warner Blu-ray releases may switch to VC-1 codec soon

Support H.264 MPEG4 AVC!
