It has six tuners - two analog, two ATSC for SD/HD from an antenna, and two QAM for SD/HD from cable. It features two CableCard slots so it can record every channel that your cable box can tune. With the off-air tuners, it can also record local HD/SD broadcasts that you don't get on cable. The Series3 records the original digital signal off cable and the airwaves so all SD/HD channels are recorded at 100% original quality.

At $799 MSRP, it is pricy. Hopefully, $799 MSRP will translate into $600 at Unternet vendors like Amazon.com and Buy.com. Tivo is currently running a $150 rebate for its DVRs, so perhaps that will be available as well.

You will have to pay for service -- $12.99/mo if you have one box, $6.99/mo if you have more than one.

Is it worth the price? Obviously that will vary from person to person. There's no question that the Tivo is substantially more reliable in its operation and recordings. It also incorporates a much larger hard drive and supports external expansion with SATA drives, for virtually unlimited HDTV recording capacity.

If you want a DVR with substantially more capacity, that is very easy to use, and offers a very high level of reliability -- i.e. no missed recordings -- then the Series3 may be for you. Personally, I don't mind paying for peace of mind. Coming home from work and finding that the DVR failed to record my favorite show the night before is not an experience that I care to repeat on a regular basis. With the Tivo, I don't have to deal with such things, and that is worth extra money to me.

Ken F

Comments on Series 3 to be released September 17th, for $799?

wow. When it first became available, I believe that it was about $1000. Plus there was a monthly service fee from DirecTV: $5 additional for the receiver, and $5 for TiVo/DVR service. One nice thing DirecTV did/does is charge one flat $5 for TiVo/DVR service per month, even if you have more than on DVR unit (but you still pay the extra receiver fee). But the bottom line was about $1000 for the equipment, plus an additional $5 or $10 per month for service.

It seems the Series 3 might be in a similar cost range.

Ryan

Comments on Series 3 to be released September 17th, for $799?

Actually I don't think that the original HD DirectTivo is a relevant comparison. That unit came out almost two years ago and had virtually no competition. It was really the only good option for recording HD. Now, DirectTV has their own HD DVR testing in LA (which is getting fairly good reviews) and virtually every cable provider offers its own HD DVR for only a couple dollars a month. I will be the first to say that Tivo is by far the best DVR on the market, however, once you get past the basic function of pause/rewind and series recording, the difference between units (for the AVERAGE user) is minimal. The average user is not going to see $500+ worth of difference. I agree with Kevin that this will not become a mass-market device at this price. I think anything above $400 is beyond what the average viewer will spend for the difference between the Series 3 vs. what they get for almost nothing from their cable provider, especially when you consider the added montly service fee from Tivo.

warren

Comments on Series 3 to be released September 17th, for $799?

TiVo, I love ya buddy but $799... *deep breath* Plus the monthly fee... *another deep breath*. I have a Sony DHG-HDD250 HD-DVR with a 250GB HD and built-in ATSC/QAM/NTSC tuner (can only record one program at a time though). It also has cable card slot. I bought this for $499 from Best Buy. It uses TV Guide for free EPG. No monthly fees. I just use OTA so, the $499 was a one time investment for me. I love the quality. Of course, people who have used Tivo rave about the user friendliness of Tivo compared to the TV Guide system, but the costs are quite different. Unfortunately, Sony has discontinued this I bet because cable companies are pushing back on providing cable card to customers and making the entire experience harder. Since, most households get their TV through cable or satellite, the cable company DVRs are really taking over! I don't have high hopes for this Tivo receiver. It also has a cablecard slot, but just one tuner. The guide is provided by Gemstar (TV Guide On Screen). Even their new non-Tivo HD-DVR is still $399 and that's a "lease fee" - you don't own the box, and you're tied in to a 2 year committment?!!? It has fewer features than their soon to be obsolete Tivo HD-DVR that cost me $1000, and you can still find that one at BestBuy for $399 *after rebates*; so for guys like me $799 isn't that bad. We can finally have a Tivo quality HD-DVR with all the new Tivo features that DirecTV didn't give us, but we don't have to stay with DirecTV! FIOS-TV just moved into town and supports CableCards, so now with Series3, uhm... The tip-off is the UPC number - numbers starting with a 4 are dummy UPC numbers:

"Dummy (number system 4) UPCs are for private use. This means anybody (typically a retailer) that needs to assign a UPC to an item that doesn't already have one, can use any number system 4 UPC it chooses.
