MTV's MHD is going stay MHD - no reality TV shows

UPDATE: TV Week provided us with the actual interview they conducted as part of their weekly HD newsletter.

The percentage of electronics at the end of their lives which were recycled.
The EPA found that the percentage remained consistent from 1999-2005. Even as recycling rates went up, the amount of electronics reaching end of life outpaced the increase, leaving the figure static. (source: EPA, July 2008)

mtv2 was suposed to be all music too. how come i dont get MHD on time warner.
if it is going to stay 'all-music' then get some different shows!
If it's not going to have HD awards shows, why did they air the VMAs on MHD in high def?
Fallout Boy and Panic! look even worse in high def. 1080 horizontal lines is not friendly to emo hair and goofy clothes.
Matt,
I don't usually frequent places where this is usually uttered, but here goes:
Amen!
If there not going 2 show reality shows on MHD..then why shoot the next Real World in HD? whats the purpose of shooting it but not air it in HD?
I don't believe it. Like it was said earlier, MTV2 was supposed to be all music and now it's just as bad as MTV.
They'll probably stick with this for a while, but I'm confident that if anyone can ruin HDTV, it will be MTV.
Yeah.....Like we haven't heard that before? MTV is just a bunch of trash...MTV 1,2 and so on..
There is a chance -- a slim one -- that Viacom may hold true to its promise. After all, in a few years, won't all cable channels air in HD? At that point, who needs MHD to be a clone of MTV? Besides, its cheaper to air HD music videos than to produce (un)reality shows in HD. For starters, Viacom doesn't have to pay for the production costs of videos, that is the responsibility of the music studio and band. Also, those cheap (un)reality shows probably won't look good in HD. Just like other posters complained about how ugly most of the VMA acts were in HD, I'm betting those girls from Laguna Beach wouldn't look nearly as hot in HD. Its the same issue for the porn industry. They are afraid that HD will reveal all the flaws that even the best makeup artist can't hide. Of course the porn industry is also slow to go HD for other reasons namely added production costs, which actually goes back to my first point on why Viacom will only air videos for the time being. My guess is that by the time production costs come down to current levels for most (un)reality shows on the current MTV, Viacom will have probably transitioned most of its cable channels including the original MTV to HD.
BTW, aside from MHD, does Viacom have any HD channels? They had UPN before it was merged with the WB to form the CW. But when Viacom and CBS split, the CW stake went to CBS.
"There isn't going to be any reality TV shows, documentaries, or even award shows in high-def because it has little to nothing to do with HD."
What does music videos have to do with HD then? This guy is smoking on something. Also, why is the VMA2006 in HD? What a hypocrite!
MHD will be catering to advertisers. I'm betting at least one-third of all air time will be for advertisements, and all of them in SD. Considering that Mtv smoked a good thing when they turned their original concept into nothing more than worse-USA channel, they should all just slit their wrists and quit bothering society. Just think of how many children (ahem, moments of indescretion) would be saved!
Viacom has Showtime HD. Which does some original programming in HD.
Reality shows (ones that are outdoors) are very expensive (currently) to produce and shoot. Documentaries are different in how and when they are shot. I dont see MHD spewing their reality shows in HD YET - but as the cost comes down in hardware/software - I wouldn't be surprised unless they bump their other stations to HD format. MHD shows VERY little videos - more concerts and other performances. While great if you like that band - it sucks for those that don't. It'd be nice to see videos on the station versus Pearl Jam again.
