After all, in a few years, won't all cable channels air in HD? At that point, who needs MHD to be a clone of MTV? Besides, its cheaper to air HD music videos than to produce (un)reality shows in HD. For starters, Viacom doesn't have to pay for the production costs of videos, that is the responsibility of the music studio and band. Also, those cheap (un)reality shows probably won't look good in HD. Just like other posters complained about how ugly most of the VMA acts were in HD, I'm betting those girls from Laguna Beach wouldn't look nearly as hot in HD. Its the same issue for the porn industry. They are afraid that HD will reveal all the flaws that even the best makeup artist can't hide. Of course the porn industry is also slow to go HD for other reasons namely added production costs, which actually goes back to my first point on why Viacom will only air videos for the time being. My guess is that by the time production costs come down to current levels for most (un)reality shows on the current MTV, Viacom will have probably transitioned most of its cable channels including the original MTV to HD.

Matt

Comments on MTV's MHD is going stay MHD - no reality TV shows

BTW, aside from MHD, does Viacom have any HD channels? They had UPN before it was merged with the WB to form the CW. I'm betting at least one-third of all air time will be for advertisements, and all of them in SD. Considering that Mtv smoked a good thing when they turned their original concept into nothing more than worse-USA channel, they should all just slit their wrists and quit bothering society. Just think of how many children (ahem, moments of indescretion) would be saved!

GhostDoggy

Comments on MTV's MHD is going stay MHD - no reality TV shows

Viacom has Showtime HD. Documentaries are different in how and when they are shot. I dont see MHD spewing their reality shows in HD YET - but as the cost comes down in hardware/software - I wouldn't be surprised unless they bump their other stations to HD format. MHD shows VERY little videos - more concerts and other performances. While great if you like that band - it sucks for those that don't. It'd be nice to see videos on the station versus Pearl Jam again.

Wryker
