Sony @ CEDIA - Pearl First Impressions

CEDIA's flood gates just opened but we were already in line to see the EXPO's first live demonstration of the heavily published 1080p Pearl. How did it look? Good. Just like we were expecting it to. Bright, crisp and accurate. The best part of the demo though was not the picture inside the dark gallery but rather when the curtains were opened and the room was filled with light. The picture maintained its integrity and look just as good. They did update us on the price of the bulb which will sell for 'around' $300. Is the Pearl looking like one of the best projectors for the money - sure does, but then again the show just started.

Why is the picture an Epson? (At least, that's what I assume the EPSO at the top-right of the image is...)

It's not an epson...that's the Sony under glass that was at Cedia.

When I looked at the demo, I saw some vignetting, and the rep said that it was because the pj was close to the screen. I didn't measure the distance but it couldn't have been closer than at least 8 feet and more likely 10. I wasn't sure what to think of that. Otherwise, it had a stunning image....outstanding color, very little noise, not much motion lag....I liked.

Geez Mr. Matt Burns, are you paid by Engadget? I mean, you were at CEDIA, you saw the Pearl, and can't even report on the most important thing?

At a street price well under $5,000 the Sony "Pearl" is the best projector, bar none, in it's class, and rivals many costing 3 times more.

With lush vibrant colors, deep blacks, a contrast ratio of 15,000:1 via its Dynamic Iris, and a native resolution of 1080p, the picture is stunning and the depth of field is very three dimensional.

Remote adjustable verticle shift, focus, and zoom, 2 HDMI inputs, super quiet fan at 22db, and a beautiful luminescent "low profile" case lead the extras this beauty has to offer. I exchanged my CRT projector for the Pearl which should speak volumes as to the picture quality. It's truly a WOW!
