Blu Ray could have higher specs yet be less appealing. But for a side note Blu Ray is not superior it simply holds more space, they have all the same standards of VC-1, Mpeg4, Mpeg2, Dolby TrueHd, etc. But it does have a nice anti scratch surface and they are apprently envirnmentally friendly. Also with games this doesnt really matter either, My PC will play games at 1920x1200, and some people are playing at 2500x1400, you dont need a disc the size of HDDVD or Blu Ray. The only thing the developers will be able you this extra space for is HD Movies in game. Why? Because I think that Sony's Blu-Ray plan is a disaster, and I think it's likely that they will lose this format war, badly. Because I would rather buy a 360 and then later, when I have a little more money, buy an HD-DVD add-on than have to come up with $600 at once for Sony's albatross. And, and I know this is a frivolous shortsighted reason, I want to see Serenity in HD way more than any movie I know of that is or is coming out on Blu-Ray.

I'm the kind of gamer who usually ends up buying every console, eventually. I probably won't be able to hold out much longer on getting a 360 for purely gaming reasons, and then just a couple hundred more gets me HD optical media. Neither format supports the other, making which ever one you choose a boat anchor when everyone else goes the other way. Ask anyone that owned a betamax.
2. Neither format is backward compatible with existing equipment. Yes there are dual type disks for one of the formats, but who would buy a movie for $35 dollars (and a bunch of promises) that plays on a DVD player when you can buy the same movie that plays on a DVD player for $15.
3. Neither has enough supply to satisfy demand. I have heard that there may be as few as 40,000 players at PS3 launch. Just enough to get it out to selected people but piss everyone else off who wants one but has to wait over a year after ordering it.
4. Neither is competitively priced. Come on $500 to $1000 for a device that may or may not working in the near future (not working meaning everyone else went the other way). The atom bomb of the format war is WALMART carrying players at under $200 and $10 disks.
5. Neither is well understood by the public at large. Also the problem with two formats being out there are not Sony or Toshiba's fault. The movie studios could of easily had one format if they had of gotten together, also it is capable of making dual format players, and Warner says they have developed a HDDVD/BluRay/DVD triple format disc. I agree that things are in a bad state right now, im sure the movie studios are losing alot of money not being able to focus on one format, because alot of people arent will to jump off the fence to either side. Comparing an upconverted DVD to a regular 1080p HD Disc is rediculous and there is absolutly no comparison. Is upconverted better than SD, yes in some ways and no in others. It does soften the image even with the Oppo which I also own but the bottom line is the HD Discs literally blow upconverting out of the water and to compare the too just shows you have no clue what your talking about. As for HD-DVD sucking, I love it and so does every other person that has jumped into it. It is currently outselling Blu-Ray 11-1 and that will likly increase over the next month or two when King Kong & Superman Returns are released.

Bottom line if your happy with SD DVD and you dont have a HDTV then stay with SD DVD's and remain as happy as you are now. But the movies.....well House of Flying pixals looked crappy to say the least, The Fifth Element on B-ray doesnt hold a candle to the Superbit version, and every other movie we tried out doesnt really sell me. And with the shortage of these "Blue rays" Im just not sure. We have the panasonic player and the Pioneer Elite B-ray players in that range from 1500-1800 dollars and they look pretty good with the demo disc but the real movie disc?....ehhh. Now the HD-DVD Player from toshiba is a peice of ..... but every movie we played on it is, well, beautiful.....Apollo 13, Tokyo Drift, Phantom of the Opera etc.... they all look great. also Sony promised us a 50gig disc, Ive seen 1 (Click) When it comes to quality..trust me hands down winner to this point is HD-DVD. I believe with the xbox 360 add on player for $200.00 coming out and with players right now averaging between 200-700 bucks, and the fact that alot of these Hd-dvd discs coming out being able to play on standerd dvd players, also take into account the high prices for B-Ray players (1000-1800 Dollars) and with the sales of Hd-dvd media out selling B-ray media 11-1 in the month of September 8-1 int he month of August and 3-1 in the month of July the trend shows HD-DVD as the early winner! Now we all know that PS3 the so called Trojan horse....well its going to be a stretch if you think this thing will be the over the topper for B-ray....think about this.
PS3 will be the most expensive game console to come out in a long time. $599.99 for the big boy...mommy and daddy will be hard pressed for the most part to pop that much doe down on this thing, If they do great, now what about the games...$60.00 a peice and well you cant get 1080p without the magic of HDMI wich by the way doesnt come with the unit...sold seperatly...$100.00 and what about a second controller....50-60 dollars.....and we havnt even talked about B-ray movies.....get my point....now for the millions of 360's out there a little $200.00 add on is available with a picture now capable of 1080p via MS latest firmware update.....I mean its not something you can avoide right now, Hd-dvd has a huge advantage....Im sorry if I keep going but its pretty clear to me.....Check the stats over at thedvdwars.com see for yourself who is buying the most media!!!!

Gabe
