So movies would be able to play in 1080p if your TV could handle it. The question is, how would they arrive at 1080p? The BluRay players that do 1080p now get there by taking a 1080i60 signal and deinterlacing it to 1080p60, so it's not like you're getting extra detail if your TV is 1080p and can already deinterlace properly.

My questions revolve around how this is going to deal with the new audio formats, since Toslink and Coaxial can't support Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master, or any of the new formats (you need HDMI or 6 channel analog outputs), and if the 1080p scaling on the DVD player will work over component, or only over the VGA cable like the previous update.

Chris Heinonen

Comments on Xbox 360 fall update adds 1080p output, HD DVD add-on hits Japan for $170 US

xBox is one very fine game console. Most posters do not have a 1080 anything. Although i'm glad to see the interest, i'm sad to realize in all that talk that still just a few are walking the walk.

I have had mine for months, and have the PS2 w/Component Video cable, quite a few games play well in 1080 already, some scale, some actually render, hardly anything actually does a worthwhile surround sound. Widescreen play is definitely more fun.

On my Westy LVM 37" w3 there is ever so slight of a processing lag i think, i drive off the road a lot on my kids car cames that have a 1080 mode.

This 1080p issue though is nuts. A nice LCD is progressive anyhow, it just takes the interlaced 1080i signal as its data & builds your image anyhow, as long as you have DCDi / Faroudja in the firmware, its going to play nicely. And in my humble opinion, the Westy upscales 720p source so nicely that it feels like HD anyhow.

whatever.. i dont see any issue here, and i'm looking forward to getting this new XBOX.

Jeff

Comments on Xbox 360 fall update adds 1080p output, HD DVD add-on hits Japan for $170 US

"And in my humble opinion, the Westy upscales 720p source so nicely that it feels like HD anyhow."

You do realize that 720p IS High Definition... All that matters is that you have a 1080p source (every bluray and HDDVD) and a full 1080p set (LCD, DLP, SXRD, "Plasma=if your rich") The TV recombines the source and you get full 1080p. I am sad though they dony have HDMI yet, it should be included with the drive so we can get some Dolby True HD and DTSHD. I will be keeping my Toshiba HD A1. This is a great price though, and not forcing it down our throats is also nice, and all that PS3 hype, well 360 owners have been playing games for a year now and they are still going to be able to get HD movies at the same time.
Also with the 1080p thing I have full 1080p DLP set, so I really can say 1080p Doesnt make a difference

Juice

Comments on Xbox 360 fall update adds 1080p output, HD DVD add-on hits Japan for $170 US

I'll be first in line when it comes to the US. Someone said that the Xbox 360 will upscale 720p to 1080p. Thats true and all, but the PS3 will do the exact same thing. Only 2 games on the PS3 have native 1080p. Grand Turismo and Virtua Tenis. Although I'm sure they look great, the GT HD trailor is the PS2 game with a higher resolution, and tennis ain't my game. This proves that Sony doesn't need Blu ray for high def gaming, and that their just hoping for us to buy their overpriced console s they can score on a format war. Their fans ARE sheep that just listen to whatever they say. The article just told you you probably won't have HD playback of HD-DVD movies for long due to the component cables. You still want to waste your money. Here's the quote from the article, again:

"Does this mean HD DVDs will play in full 1080p via component? AACS would seem to answer a big no to that question..."

$200 for HD-DVD strap-on, Xbox 360 premium $400, and $100 for HDMI addition (whenever it comes out). You are at $700 for your Xbox 360 (plus a lot of space is gone--BIG power supply, Xbox 360, and HD-DVD add-on). Plus, you still don't use HD-DVD discs for game play.

Now all you have to do is add 2 more HDD for $200 more, add a wireless adapter for $100, and a web browser (you can't have that) to get close to what the PS3 is giving you for $600.

I guess some people have to be on the SHORT YELLOW BUS.
