If you're thinking about picking up a first or
second generation HD DVD player from Toshiba, consider the pot sweetened. The promotion doesn't apply until November 1st, so walk, don't run to your local retailer and keep the receipt. Mail it in with the above form and in a speedy 8 to 10 weeks you will be the proud owner of at least three HD DVDs. One each from column A, B and C, customers will get one disc from each of the three major studios so far supporting HD DVD. Free is exactly the right price to us; but while three discs compares well to the
one free movie that comes the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on and
PlayStation 3, having to wait two months pretty much kills the warm fuzzies. This offer does not apply to the Toshiba-built
RCA HDV5000, but it does include the HD-A2W we haven't seen before; Toshiba tells us its not an entirely new model but a limited club edition like the HD-D1. List of titles is after the break.
Read - The Perfect Offer: 3 free HD DVDs (Warning: PDF link)
Buyers can select one each from the following three groups:
Category A (Universal)
- Apollo 13
- The Chronicles of Riddick
- The Rundown
- Seabiscuit
- U-571
Category B (Warner)
- Blazing Saddles
- Casablanca
- Constantine
- The Dukes of Hazzard
- The Perfect Storm
Category C (Paramount)
- Four Brothers
- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
- Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
- U2: Rattle and Hum
- We Were Soldiers
Can't say I'm hugely bothered by the titles available... they're not ones I would ever actually consider buying myself, but hey, they're free.
Not bad titles. From my memory here's the consensus about PQ
Apollo 13 - Decent quality on this good film. About avg
The Chronicles of Riddick - So So movie but standout quality
The Rundown- Better than avg quality ok movie.
Seabiscuit - Lush PQ decent movie if you're into historical stuff.
U-571 - good soundtrack (depth charges) avg to above avg quality
Blazing Saddles- surprising above avg PQ. Movie is an acquired taste(Mel Brooks)
Casablanca - Unreleased
Constantine- So so movies above avg quality better interactivity than initial movies
The Dukes of Hazzard - soft picture compared to most DVD.
Four Brothers - Surprising PQ so so movie.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - avg PQ
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - %80 CGI so PQ is capped
U2: Rattle and Hum - grain in master comes through loud and clear.
We Were Soldiers -above avg quality underrated movie.
So for me it's looking like
Seabiscuit
Blazing Saddles
We Were Soldiers
The Perfect Storm
What a crappy selection. There's not a movie on that list that I would buy.
Haha, last desperate atempts to save the format. It sounds like 3 for 1 dolar :D
Dave I bet you can't even afford Blu Ray... oh by the way look at this site and you'll see who the dying format is.. http://www.thedvdwars.com/index.cfm
Dave you clearly are the villiage idiot. You spend more time making inane comments about HD DVD than you do watching Blu-ray movies.
True, i dont watch them, i burm them, idiot!
ops I almost forgot to mention that the British already prefer HD DVD.. http://www.dvd-recordable.org/Article3040.phtml
Ed I'm not going to accept data from a site that calls Blu-Ray discs "DVDs". And BTW, don't insult people for "not even being able to afford Blu-Ray" because that's simply just low, not to mention one of the main reason people (like you) seem to love HD DVD is the fact that the players cost about half as much.
And "the dying format"? Blu-Ray is "dying"? According to your little site, Blu-Ray is consistently increasing. Then again I don't like that site, but you can find data elsewhere that proves this, both for HD DVD and Blu-Ray. Both are steadily increasing. That's not what happens when something "dies".
Personally, I have to side with this site's own Mr. Drawbaugh, Blu-Ray will win. HD DVD is making a valiant effort, but it simply isn't enough. (Just like 30 GB.)
not only do they cost half as much but every review has shown that HD DVD is superior in terms of picture and sound quality not to mention reliability over BD. oh can you explain to me why Sony has delayed their player for like the 5th time? Or why can't Samsung fix the faulty chip and HDMI connection of their BD player? Or way LG, Samsung, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Fujitsu among other have release HD DVD equiped laptops and desktops????
I don't know who will win, but 30 GB is clearly enough room for a high quality HD transfer.
As far as this offer goes, I remember getting a coupon for 3 free DVDs back when I bought my first or second DVD player. This type of promotion isn't done as a "last desperate attempt to save a dying format".
Unless you invented one of the formats or work for one of the companies, I don't see how people can get so nasty about which one is better or which will win.
BTW people, Best Buy has an offer:
Get two BR movies when you buy the Samsung player and 2 BR movies.
Oh the desperation!!!!!!!!!!
Get over yourselves...
Cool, but I think I'm gonna pick up the HD-DVD addon for my 360.
$400 for stand alone and 3 free movies
or $200 XBOX 360 add on and 1 free movie.
I want $350 stand alone and 1 free movie...so I will still wait, but I hope the sales go up because of this.
The Xbox HD DVD actually could cost you $99.99, It comes with King Kong $40 and the Media Remote ($30) Amazon.com has it with free shipping($10) and if you apply for their card you get $30 off. $99 for better picture and sound than Blu Ray!!!
