Xbox 360 fall update details revealed: 1080p, auto-download, WMV playback and more
Microsoft has finally seen fit to release the details of its Xbox 360 dashboard update. Scheduled for release the morning of October 31st -- yes, that's tomorrow -- the update will add the much-talked about 1080p / HD DVD support, as well as the ability to play WMV files from a connected PC, disc, or USB storage device. Currently, users can only stream video from connected Windows Media Center PCs, but any XP machine running Windows Media Connect or Windows Media Player 11 should be able to do it post-update, as demonstrated during a press conference in Japan with several 720p-encoded videos. This compares to the PlayStation 3's recently-revealed compatibility with MPEG-4 and other video files, but so far neither has announced support for DivX / Xvid and Media Transcode 360 still requires Media Center. Apparently only 84 things needed fixing this time, down from the 125 in the spring update, including the option to automatically download demos of new Xbox Live Arcade titles, Zune media streaming, wireless headset support, XNA Game Studio Express and numerous improvements to video playback and menu handling.

Woo I'm really psyched about the latest update. Kinda lame it took em this long to finally turn on video playback for us poor XP users. Well I guess it's time to start encoding all my video to WMV now :)
nice that they will allow WMV playback from disc or external HDD. I wonder if it will support DRMed WMV files?
WHAT...no H.264 support! Common MS, HD-DVD support means you're nov update adds H.264 decoding internally, why won't you stingy bastards open it up to allow us to stream our H.264 videos from our computers to the 360? The PS3 allows it! Do you not realize that the future of HD Camcorders is H.264? In order to watch my home movies with a 360 I have to spend hours re-encoding to WMV...no thanks! I'm getting tired of waiting for H.264 support. If it's not out soon, I'm selling my Xbox 360.
I JUST RESERVED MY XBOX HD DVD FROM AMAZON. COME TO PAPA!!!! If you think about it it's only $99 if you apply for the Amazon Visa you get an extra $30 off. Since the remote it's free ($29.99) and so is King Kong ($39.99) and free shipping ($10) you actually pay $99.99. TAKE THAT BLU RAY LOVERS!!!
i own a 360...how do i get this update?
The update will occur tomorrow if you're connected to Live.
That update did nothing for me , i just bought the Sony 60" SXRD XBR2 .. amazing tv , But of course it doesnt take 1080P w/ out hdmi , and the pc input doesnt even take 1080p , and its not the full screen anyhow ..
That's one of the reasons why I've decided to wait on the SXRD's. I really want one ,but the restricted connection thing just doesn't work for me.
This is a problem with most of the HDTV's. Give us what we want you bastards ;)
Well i am EXTREMLY happy with the picture quailty , my last HDTV was the Sony 34XBR910 34" widescreen Tube , at the time had the highest Picture quality aviable , but when i moved it was just too small for my living area ( a 1500 sq ft studio , a former Dojo ) Anyhw i got the 60" SXRD and i am still drooling , best picture i have ever seen , So it doesnt do 1080P in vga or anything other then HDMI , but it does have 3 HDMI inputs all native 1080P .. you take the good with the bad
Where do I find some good WMV HD content? MS hasn't updated thier own showcase site in.. probably 2+ years...
This article need a little less editorial and more information. The article makes it sound like Microsoft was late with this update. There was no set time on the update, and they put it out a month before the holiday buying season kicks into full swing. This update seemed to contain just about as many new enhancements that were not bug fixes. Lets try to keep articles impartial from now on.
It looks like my 42" Westy does support 1080p over component after all :)
