Well it has already happened if you check many of the online retailers you can find LCDs at our now below that price point for that size LCD. Albeit off brands and not specs that most of us here would be all that impressed by, the average Joe will not care! But this set are real HD not EDTV and good enough to be called HD, these set will be the catalyst for shifting the HD tide. (Check Ecost.com for examples. 800:1 contrast and 1280 x 1024 sets.)
This in my opinion is the turning point for HD with Sets at the price the Wal-Mart crowd i.e. the Rest of the WORLD (non technophiles) will jump in head first to HD. In addition many of the early adopters will go for second and third displays. More consumers that have HD will equal a larger base for which to justify network HD content creation. 2007 WILL BE THE YEAR OF HD for real this time.

BMW68

Comments on Black Friday promises deals on HDTVs, riots likely

I have a ton of information on my site about black friday:
http://www.bf-06.com

freestufftimes

Comments on Black Friday promises deals on HDTVs, riots likely

Best Buy will have a 32" Westinghouse for $479

Ken

Comments on Black Friday promises deals on HDTVs, riots likely

Ya know, there are a lot of people out there who are being misled by these el cheapo EDTV and HDTV monitors. I was looking through some of 'em and about 80-85% of the monitors' max resolution is something like 1280x800 or 1366x900, some are at 1440x10xx (or close to that, I don't recall the exact resolution). Very very few are full 1920x1080 screens, and the ones that are are considerably more expensive. I think a lot of people are being misled about HD/ED/SD and there will be a looooot of very unhappy people on February 9th 2009 when they're not able to play HD material on their EDTV (or it will look substandard compared to a normal HD monitor). I'm not sure I feel sorry for people, since they should have done some research before buying, but it almost does seem like the companies are intentionally misleading people in an effort to sell more TVs, which is something we've never seen before. 5 years ago, you bought a TV and it was a TV, they were all pretty much the same other than the size...you didn't have to worry about resolution or contrast ratio, nits or anything like that, and I think a lot of people are going to continue to buy TVs in the old manner...a TV is a TV is a TV...but it's not anymore.

baron

Comments on Black Friday promises deals on HDTVs, riots likely

Duuuuuuude,
1080 is not the magic number for all HD content. For the most part, if you’re resourceful you can find deals as good as or sometimes better during the rest of the year, without all the hassles of the crowd and waiting in line in the early hours the day after Thanksgiving.

Black Friday to me is right up there with people waiting days or weeks in line outside a retailer for a game console release.

Baron,

1280x720 and 1920x1080 are both HDTV.

854x480 is EDTV (dieing as HDTV become cheaper).

A TV with at least 720 lines can be considered an HDTV.

February 17, 2009 is the cutoff date for analog TV. All it means is that broadcasters will need to broadcast in digital (which range from SDTV to HDTV). It doesn’t mean that when that date arrives, all TV that is not 1080 will be useless; it just means that analog broadcast will end. It also doesn’t mean that all TV programming will be in high definition. There will be shows in high def and also shows in standard def, the difference is the broadcast needs to be done digitally. That is all the cutoff date is for. Personally, I thought they should have just stayed with the Dec 31, 2006 cutoff date, prolonging it till 2009 just dragging feet on something that should be done and over with.

Currently, high def shows are broadcast in either 720p or 1080i. 1080p content is few and far between (currently just games and high def discs). For the majority of folks out there, 1080p TV’s is not a necessity. It will eventually get to the point where everything will be published in 1080p (or higher) but considering how things are progressing, that’s a long time till that happens. It’s already long enough till everything will be in at least 720p.

HD material will play on EDTV’s, it will just be down-converted.

pliepl

Comments on Black Friday promises deals on HDTVs, riots likely

I think EDTVs are already dead. I wanted to buy one for my grandparents, who need a new TV. They don't have or care about HD content (they don't even own a DVD player). My friend bought a 32" Polaroid LCD earlier this year from Circuit City for $1100. On black friday, you can get a 720P 40" Polaroid HDTV (includes ATSC tuner) for $999. Cool eh! I know Polaroid is not a high end brand, but my friend loves his 32". If you use your own speakers, this TV is not a bad deal at all. Most TVs now a days are HD monitors or HDTVs.
