While Paramount's
Mission: Impossible III didn't make it out on one of those forthcoming
three-in-one mega discs, it did get the
green light on all
three major
formats (and a
forth, too), and set some records while it was at it. While Tom's personal life has been all but personal, the general public apparently still loves him, crazy antics and all, as studio sources have pegged first-week sales at 3.7 million units, more than either of the two previous releases in the franchise. More importantly, however, is the 20,000 units that were sold on HD DVD / Blu-ray formats, which made it the "the biggest-selling next-gen title since the formats launched. But with quite a few
hits slated to
hit shelves soon (and during the holiday shopping season, no less), we don't expect this record to stand for too terribly long.
Come one - you know what we want - the HD-DVD BluRay Breakout! How many for each format!?
Yeah why wasn't that included in the post?!!
Apparently the news writers didn’t feel it was important to segregate Blu-ray and HD DVD sales, choosing to lump them together instead as the “HD versions” of the film. After both take off a bit more, we suppose the numbers will begin to gain singular identities rather than being clumped together as one entity.
Well if you look @ amazon sales figures then HD-DVD is doing much better than blurry.
Now before someone posts that amazon sales rankings are not exact it does give us a ballpark figure.
Mission Impossible - Ultimate Missions Collection [Blu-ray]
Price: $69.95
Sales rank: 3532 (#5 among Blu-ray)

Mission Impossible - Ultimate Missions Collection [HD DVD]

Sales rank: 499 (#7 among HD-DVD)

Superman Returns [Blu-ray]

The ranking # is how popular that title is compared to all DVD (SD DVD, HD-DVD, and Bluray). Lower is better, higher is worse. #1 would be the highest selling DVD for that week.
Interesting place to get these figures is:

Some interesting #s:
HD-DVD has more titles for purchase. (97 vs 65)
HD-DVD has more titles (when including presales). (148 vs 94)
