I'd rather see a router-based robust VPN/VLAN solution for gamers. This would allow them to treat the WAN as a LAN and use something like System Link in the Xbox to connect with friends without engaging Live.
Didn't know if you were aware or not, but you can already somewhat do this using a utility like XBConnect (http://www.xbconnect.com/).
