Right now, the format war is being decided by a few massive companies. The deciding factor will be with the consumer masses, which won't be for a LONG time. Both really shine when you see them in HD versus SD. I honestly can't stand watching SD broadcasts anymore. Honestly, take a look at a football, baseball, soccer, hockey game (whatever floats your boat) in HD. Then watch the same footage in SD. (Keeping in mind that you want to have at last a 42" television for HD.)

As for HD DVD versus Blu-Ray ... I don't know anyone who is objective that thinks HD-DVD will win the format war. They simply won't have the installed base of Blu-Ray. PERIOD. The PS3 makes it like a 5:1 ratio already and that margin will only INCREASE. I have absolutely nothing against HD-DVD, but it's a dead end technology without any major backers (movie studios.) If anyone thinks that ONE major movie studio releasing HD-DVD's exclusively will make someone choose HD-DVD over Blu-Ray, think again.

It's just a matter of time. Blu-ray is the victor. By the time HD only sets are being sold in the US, PS3 will have given Blu-Ray an insurmountable lead in optical format.

Make no mistakes, folks. It is far better than HD DVD in all aspects. I read an interesting article the other day that was talkign about how the porn industry had a major role in deciding who would win the last battle of media format (VHS v. Betamax. VHS broke a deal with major porn industries and offered them a huge discount on the price of their product. At the same time, Sony refused to solly their product with innapropriate content. If you doubt the ammount of power the pornography industry has; the sales in videos for the adult film industry for 2006 were something like $12.4 million, while the sale of regular movies was around $9 million. I forget the actual numbers but I am possitive that these numbers are very accurate.

Currently, HD DVD has already made a deal with Club Jenna (Jenna Jameson...we all now who she is.) and Sony is still considering whether or not they want to make the same mistake that they did years ago.

Betamax was far better than VHS and it still lost that war. Aren't quite a lot of this influx of Blu-Ray sales going to come from the PS3, and not necessarily show improving/good Blu-Ray filmography sales? Indeed, the website linked just states 'disc sales' - surely this can only be interpreted as to mean the inclusion of PS3 media sales as well? I wonder if these would include the introductory disc 'Talladega Nights' as well as all of the PS3 games. If all PS3 related media were included in these statistics, it would be extremely reasonable to assume that in filmography HD-DVD was still wiping the floor with Blu-Ray.
Some of you may say that surely if PS3 games sales were included in this number, the figure would be higher. What we must remember is that it is a number of weeks since the PS3 release, the resupply and uptake have not been large, and the number (and quality) of games, and so games which are associated as 'must-haves', are limited. I would not put the PS3 associated sales past being only just above half of the mentioned figures.
Using the supplied data, we can also hazard a guess that (also, if PS3 data is included) the Blu-Ray disc sales increase is due, in the main, to the increasing PS3 supply (if if the uptake may only be trickling).
Now, although Blu-Ray may be catching up on total disc sales, if the PS3 associated figures are included in these statistics, this could just be due to Sony 'forcing' a new format onto the public. Whether it can win outright remains to be seen, but my own gut feeling suggests that it can't last the distance (and I wouldn't be too sorry to see it go - just bring HVD!)
All the best,
Andy

andy

Comments on VideoScan releases HD DVD / Blu-ray "charts," results still inconclusive

Don't be silly. Do you think Xbox games are counted as DVD sales? It is very easy to distinguish between games and movies, you would have to go out of your way to include games and that would be pointless.

Undoubtedly PS3 is responsible, but it is PS3 owners buying movies, just look at some of the other links, including Amazon sales ranks. You can see that Blu Ray is up everywhere.

For anyone who hasn't bought you just need to look at the movie release links for each format (links on previous page) to see that Blu Ray will lead. Tracking movies is their thing. If they somehow magically counted games and the freebies, we're looking at another 6 million discs (5 million games and 1 million Taladegas). It's crystal clear. HD-DVD had a sizable lead, is still in the lead (if slightly), but is quickly losing it to Blu-Ray, who, at the current rate, will soon surpass HD-DVD and leave it in the dust.

As for which is 'superior' - what? They both hold data, the same data, and it's only by volume of data held that Blu-Ray looks to have the eventual edge. But so what? There are other issues at play - compatibility, cost, etc. And as for the present time, they both hold all the HD content I need on a single disc.

appletree

Comments on VideoScan releases HD DVD / Blu-ray "charts," results still inconclusive

"Right there. Fox/Sony/MGM et al. Just have way more announced (with actual shipping dates) and unannounced block busters.

Anyway I have to get a new TV first anyway. After that I will decide what player to get. Today I would get a PS3.
