Hasn't anyone bothered to raise the most simple and obvious point? Aren't quite a lot of this influx of Blu-Ray sales going to come from the PS3, and not necessarily show improving/good Blu-Ray filmography sales? Indeed, the website linked just states 'disc sales' - surely this can only be interpreted as to mean the inclusion of PS3 media sales as well? I wonder if these would include the introductory disc 'Talladega Nights' as well as all of the PS3 games. If all PS3 related media were included in these statistics, it would be extremely reasonable to assume that in filmography HD-DVD was still wiping the floor with Blu-Ray. Some of you may say that surely if PS3 games sales were included in this number, the figure would be higher. What we must remember is that it is a number of weeks since the PS3 release, the resupply and uptake have not been large, and the number (and quality) of games, and so games which are associated as 'must-haves', are limited. I would not put the PS3 associated sales past being only just above half of the mentioned figures. Using the supplied data, we can also hazard a guess that (also, if PS3 data is included) the Blu-Ray disc sales increase is due, in the main, to the increasing PS3 supply (if if the uptake may only be trickling). Now, although Blu-Ray may be catching up on total disc sales, if the PS3 associated figures are included in these statistics, this could just be due to Sony 'forcing' a new format onto the public. Whether it can win outright remains to be seen, but my own gut feeling suggests that it can't last the distance (and I wouldn't be too sorry to see it go - just bring HVD!) All the best, Andy
Don't be silly. Do you think Xbox games are counted as DVD sales? It is very easy to distinguish between games and movies, you would have to go out of your way to include games and that would be pointless.
Undoubtedly PS3 is responsible, but it is PS3 owners buying movies, just look at some of the other links, including Amazon sales ranks. You can see that Blu Ray is up everywhere.
For anyone who hasn't bought you just need to look at the movie release links for each format (links on previous page) to see that Blu Ray will lead. The only question is if/how long HD DVD will hang around as an also ran format.
With Recent blockbusters coming out in Blu Ray ONLY like Casino Royal, Pirates of the Carribean 1&2 (announced) and Spiderman 1&2 expected soon. HD DVD has lost. It will be second fiddle format a trend that will only accelerate as people see this years releases and note the writing on the wall.
I have been thinking about a PS3 just for movies, but I am hoping for a price cut first.
