Sony's BDP-S300 does Blu-ray on the cheap this summer
Just in time for summer blockbuster season, Sony's pre-announced its new BDP-S300 low-end Blu-ray player. It'll go for a cool $600 -- still significantly less than the better-late-than-never S1 -- and will apparently have all the fixins of its predecessor, as well as CD playback, and a size closer to a traditional DVD player. Which makes you wonder why they'd announce a "low-end" model so early and that's basically the same. Perhaps because they're not as confident about consumer Blu-ray pickup as they'd have hoped? We don't know, but we have a feeling they just killed S1 sales through summer.

Enjoy it cheap hd dvd fans!
The last and only advantage of hd dvd vanished...
So Blu-ray is better and same price now. What are you hanging for???
LOL
Toshiba HD-A2s are $400 right now. The BDP-S300 will be $600 "this summer".
Toshiba (ugly looks, glitches, dead curse) VS Sony (beautiful, quality, name) -> difference $199.
Any normal human will chose the Sony ;)
"Toshiba (ugly looks, glitches, dead curse)"
I think you meant SAMSUNG here...not Toshiba there Sony fanboy
I'd debate both points on that one!
Beautiful??? Really? Its a blue box. seriously.
Sony = Quality? Well let me... Oh no! My laptop is on fire! AhhhhhH!!!!!
Dave, wipe the potater chip crumbs off your bloated body, get off your chair for the first time in a month, and get some fresh air. Short of you being the CEO of Sony, no one else on this planet could be such a clueless suckass. I suggest everyone press the Red Negative button on all your posts, you offer nothing.
For the rest of us, why would Sony put out a player like this? Makes no sense. They make a "budget" player and still can't approach HD DVD prices. They need to get their head out of their arses.
Looks like a very nice model. for the money though i wouldnt mind the PS3. which still compared very favorably against it.
although as a standalone, it looks very nice.
In my case player look don't matter I got an home cinema and I cannot see any players, what I mean in general is: it's what the player delivers that count the most, but that's in my case. Guys I don't understand why you fighting so much about this war, blu-ray is good now but still it could lose the war, in an other if HDdvd doesn't deliver they will lose. We do not know at this stage. Anyway let's wait for a good review of this player and see what it can do.
Dave let me guess, you were a male cheerleader in high school right?!
this economical player doesn't decode TrueHD or DTS HD. Oops!
Hopefully the third-party vendors will get some better BluRay equipment out before this half-assed attempt. So much for "quality" dave!
I love Sony's "pre-announcements". They also pre-announced $300 players. Pre-announced they won the stupid war. How about pre-announcing that all these stand alone players are still buggy and movies still won't be full functional?
Well I heard from some sites that this player will have HDMI 1.3 (although I dont know how reliable those sources are). If it does have it, you can get Dolby trueHD and DTS HD through an upcoming HDMI 1.3 A/V receiver.
Is requiring a $1500 HDMI 1.3 receiver for sound quality considered a plus? You'd think if Toshiba could do it for this price, why can't Sony? Heck, where's the advantage of all this extra storage if HD-DVD can do more with less?
