AACS patch for WinDVD, HD DVD and BD players: update or never watch movies again

In case DRM hasn't caused you -- the honest consumer -- enough pain already. Check it, you've got some required software updating to do now that Corel has introduced a patch to their cracked InterVideo WinDVD software. Best do it pronto too. According to Corel, "failure to apply the update will result in AACS-protected HD DVD and BD playback being disabled." That means no more hi-def movies for you, Mr. assumed criminal. Thing is, this is no ordinary patch since WinDVD exposed the hardware specific device key to video pirates. So not only are you required to update their janky WinDVD software, you also have to track down and install the paticular AACS patch for the HD DVD or BD player you own. Of course this only patches one flaw in the massively compromised DRM boondoggle. Just think, you can repeat the whole process again after hackers circumvent this latest attempt at "content protection." Isn't DRM nice?[Via Impress]
Are they seriously going to make players you buy not work for any hd movie without a patch? This is ludicris. I was going to get my dad a blu ray player, but if this happens he would say, i guess it broke and return it. Best Buy will hate this.
Has HD DVD/BD playback support even available? According to Intervideo's site it's "available soon".
It's definitely been available to people who buy PCs with a drive of either format, I'm not sure if you have been able to buy the software by itself yet.
why wouldn't the studios include the AACS update on all new BDs? I'd imagine it wouldn't take up much space.
Well f them. I am legit with purchasing DVDs, but I rip them to my computer for gif making, parodies, mvs and also for backing up. I own a lot of movies (over 300) and backing them up is a must for me.
If I get BR or HDDVD one day I wish to back them up.
I even more so don't support drm on music because I remix music and make mvs.. because of this I stopped buying off itunes because an update made it a pain to crack th drm making so now I can't convert to edit with it and add it to my 360.
