This is an obvious sign that Toshiba will be reducing the costs by all their players by $100 before Christmas. Hell I'd even say it could happen before August. Toshiba is testing the market to see if $100 off, and the magic $299 price truely will increase sales by a significant number. Personally I think it will, especially for Father's Day. A lot of new middle class families got HDTVs for Christmas last year and now there is a cheap (IN-store) option to get HD Movies.
Definitely something I would get for my father.
P.S. I realize that Amazon has HD DVD players for about $320 but even then a lot of families don't like to wait, and much prefer to goto the store to buy something. Its a big push, no doubt about it.
