The Departed HD DVD / Blu-ray disc breaks 100k mark in sales
While it wasn't too long ago that Tom Cruise was jumping off couches after finding out that Mission: Impossible III broke all sorts of HD disc sales records, it looks like there's a new champ in town. Warner Home Video has proudly announced that The Departed has sold over 100,000 units during its short stint on the shelves, making it arguably the largest selling high-definition movie to date. It should come as no surprise that the press release is mum when it comes to HD DVD vs. Blu-ray numbers, but it did suggest that supporting both formats seemed like an amicable solution to appease both camps. So, any guesses as to which format strengthened the final figure most?[Via HighDefDigest]

once again another sign that both formats can share the market
ummm...not really, this just goes to show that people were really to buy this movie in an hd formatted disc. for that to be true, the sales would also have to be close to a 50:50 ratio...which is hardly true for any movies that are released in both formats. if the ratio were say 63:37 in favor of bluray, that would show that bluray is beating the crap outta hd-dvd, or vice versa
Dude, why did microsoft have to make a hd dvd add on and now a blu ray add on. I would have bought blu ray add on instead. Now I invested in the wrong format... i think... I hope not but I keep hearing bad news about hd dvd.
As for the article, wow, 100k amazing
The Departed breaks 100k mark in sales.
Didn't this happen two weeks ago?
These lumped statistics are great for the dual format camp, but us fanboys want sales figures broken out by format! Curious minds want to know if these record sales are a function of PS3 owners or the infamous Father's Day sale.
Unforatunetly, 100,000 units of a title are small potatoes next to the volume seen for the tried and true DVD format.
Blu-ray kicks hd-dvd in the nuts with this one.
As of March, Bluray was about 62% of sales for The Departed.
Based on this info and everything else I've read, no title has come out on both formats on the same day and sold more on HD-DVD then Bluray.

@J
Guess you've never heard of Planet Earth.
Also Iwo Jima and Flags of our fathers sold almost identical amounts for HD DVD and Blu-ray with BD winning by a few hundred copies.
Looks like you are right, Planet Earth has sold 5% better on HD-DVD thus far.
Also, April numbers on The Departed still show Bluray at about 62% (58,300/93,600)
62% is also the lead Bluray has overall in 2007, though they are higher so far in June.

That would make sense that planet earth would sell more on HD DVD. PS3 overall appeals to the younger user. Up to early 30's would be my guess which this title has no appeal to. Anyone buying HDDVD is somebody that can afford one who's not a gamer and is a audio/videophile, they are buying planet earth.
I'm 32, I own a ps3 for both gaming and 1080p on my samsung 1080p. I don't own planet earth, i will rent it. I own the departed though.
Wow - who gives a damn about combined sales of Hi-Def formats when they are less than what? 1% ..2% of dvd sales. Wake me up when the figure gets closer to 50 %. Yawn...
To put this figure in perspective, Sony announced in the 1st month that several UMD titles sold 100k copies back in 2005.
