For example, despite how poorly Matrix sold on hd-dvd in its first week, combined sales of Pirates 1 and 2 came to a whopping 47,000 units. You do the math, if only 47,000 units are sold in week one of supposedly the biggest release to happen to the format, out of a "potential" 1.5 million players. The number is consistant, because it's been averaged since March that less than 3% of all total PS3 owners have bought blu-rays. Blu-ray is outselling hd-dvd, but the verdict right now says that the VAST majority of PS3 owners don't give a damn.

If people want to see how many PS3's are being used as blu-ray players, a good start would be seeing how many blu-ray remotes for the ps3 have been sold. That'll give us a bare minimum number.

I have both, and I have been much happier with HD-DVD, if only because the PS3 is practically a space heater in how much heat it puts out. However it wasnt until the P$3 came along sales picked up. Nobody was talking about blu ray until they realized the P$3 sucked as a gaming console. Making its buyers default to blu ray supporters.

Its funny how every blu ray supporter is a P$3 fanboy, you rarely if ever catch anyone on these forms saying they own a stand alone player. I guess I'd be a blu ray supporter too if I bought a 600.00 game machine with no games. Every P$3 owner owns 1-2 games and like 10-15 movies, thats why blu ray supporters are so passionate about the format war because first they're gamers and second they dont want their 600.00 investment to go down the drain.

Blu Ray has three exclusive studios to HD DVD's one, however Fox hasnt released anything really and is it me or does Warner Bros. seem to have a better relationship with HD DVD(Harry Potter, Batman Begins, Matrix Trilogy). Even though Blood Diamond is going to BD first a month later HD DVD gets a better version packed with way more features.

Like it or not every stand alone player sold for either format is 100% for movies, while a P$3 or Xbox 360 can go either way, thats why you dont see as many HD DVD add ons involved because Xbox owners were given an option. There are far more 360's sold than P$3's if people really wanted to get in this format thing, the 11 million 360's out there would play a major role in this. Maybe it was Sony's plan to not release good games for its consumers until blu ray wins the format war? Damn they're so smart!

If they ever decide to release a decent game or two blu ray sales will began to slope, the average Blu Ray or HD DVD is 25-35 bucks, where as to every P$3 or 360 game is 60 bucks, two games a month is about 120 bucks before taxes, which translates to about 5 movies a month, now subtract five from about the 3.2 million P$3's sold, (ARE YOU STILL WITH ME?) Multiply that by twelve, damn thats a lotta movies!

Blu Ray supporters keep thinking things are over, I know you all think the P$3 has a chance at coming back and winning the Console War too.

I say that both formats will be around for a long time, DVDs are doing just fine and there really isnt any major technical differences between the two, except that BD has larger capacity, but if you read reviews for cross platform titles HD DVD receives better reviews for audio and video quality.

I issue a challenge to you Blu Ray/P$3 fanboys, go out and find a stand alone BD player thats selling well, find a cross platform movie thats received a better review in BD format from more than one site and finally find at least three games that make a P$3 worth buying, I'M WAITING....

misterhearn

Comments on HD DVD player sales reach all time high

misterhearn u forgot to tell em to go to their local circuit city, best buy or target and see how easy it is to find a ps3 in stock. and how hard it is to find a hd dvd player i told em fanboys can cheer but stats dont lie

will

Comments on HD DVD player sales reach all time high

Yeah thats true, a friend of mine works @ Best Buy in West L.A. and Blu Ray players arent selling there too well, they get several P$3 returns(who actually returns a game system unless its broken?) they got the LG combo player in which from what I hear isnt too good, it lacks full HD DVD support and has a high price tag @ that.

I'm yet to see anyone respond to my little challenge, I'd honestly say 98% of blu ray supporters are P$3 owners and about 65-70% of HD DVD supporters are stand alone owners, If half the Xbox 360 owners bought an HD DVD add on Blu Ray would probably die overnight lol.

I honestly dont see one winning anytime soon but I do back HD DVD, unlike the P$3 owners out there I do own more games (32 360 games to be exact) than I HD DVDs (9 total)

misterhearn

Comments on HD DVD player sales reach all time high

"Part of the reason is because I don't have enough inputs on my matrix switch"

yeah, who knew we'd need all these hidef inputs. I dont like how they used a respectable brand such as the Playstation to practically force Blu Ray on people, thats why I refer to it as a P$3(hence the dollar sign). There was never a need to place a Blu Ray drive in the system, but Sony knew that people would buy the P$3 based on Sony's great history with the previous playstation platforms. I think thats unfair, I owned a playstation one and two, but snubbed the P$3 for those reasons alone. Sony doesnt care about its loyal consumers and the P$3 is living proof. Theres nothing special about the system its not the "supercomputer" it was hyped to be and it doesnt do anything beyond its competition.

Storing music isnt that impressive you know the old xbox did that? As for the powerbrick its not the prettiest thing but I'll take it before a failing internal power supply causing me to send in the entire system.

As for calling the P$3 a "flagship" product I wouldn't kid myself. Sony makes good TVs but the third time was not a charm with the P$3.

Joe I have to ask were you pro blu ray before the P$3? How many video games do you own for your P$3?
I'm not comparing collections here either, just confirming a point. I have 10 or so games, 5 or so blueray movies and a pile of cd's/mp3's. You have a party line but NOTHING constructive to argue against the PS3 or blue-ray.

As an aside. This "next gen" thing hasn't started and won't for some time. The PS2 still has the best game play value. The games look excellent and play well. The library is so big I could play nothing but ps2 games from now until I die and not get to them all. It has more AAA titles than anything else and they cost MUCH less. Being devoted to a 'next gen' system means you pretty much have to buy every piece of trash that comes out because there are so few games, much less good ones. I find the quality of current PS3 games to be good even on the worst of 'em but I still won't drop $60 on most of them.

joe

Comments on HD DVD player sales reach all time high

Actually I was between work @ the office when I last posted, so I didnt get to give a full response to your post.

Ah, I could have said Tivo, apple TV(not really my thing) I'm more of a custom media center type of guy, I've got a Directivo(great) and two DirecTv brand DVRs (that I hate), my personal choice is my Linux based(Gentoo) media server set up with a samba share does 720p and 1080i with DVD scaling as well as pretty much support most file types, which is one thing these so called next gen game consoles lack support for. A movie is a movie is a movie. Both formats offer 1080p video and lossless audio. Great, bring it on!

My thoughts on Blu-Ray:

Sony has done it again. They have created another format that they "own" and that also requires a complete overhaul of the technology that creates the gazillions of little plastic frisbees, which they hope will become the "standard" (and standard for how long?). This reminds me of minidisc and betamax all over again. And why did they do this? GREED! They get money for every disc manufactured that has the "Blu-Ray" logo on it. When hardware manufactures start dictating software formats, look out! It's not something that I am comfortable with.

My thoughts on HD-DVD:

This format does not require a complete overhaul of the equipment that burns the content to the media. This makes more sense in my opinion, and is more environmentally friendly. The HD-DVD discs cannot hold as many 0's and 1's, however. But compare that to the cost of the media, and that issue is negated.

The question [really] is if your favorite movies will be available for the disc media your player supports. The disc is just a round piece of plastic filled with bits of 0's and 1's that make up pictures and sound, so I am a little bit dumbfounded that this must become such an issue.

I personally would support a player with a hefty hard disc that I could download a movie to, then back up the movie onto a plug-in USB/FireWire optical drive of your choice that supports whatever little plastic frisbee you choose that can hold the amount of data required for the backup.

That's the direction of the future, in my opinion.

This "war" is a non-starter...let's hold these manufacturers feet to the fire and make them come up with technology that REALLY makes sense. I, for one, am beginning to resent the amount of $$$ I must spend for "technology upgrades" every few years. What we should be talking about is how we, the consumers, are being milked of our hard earned cash!!! Sony and all the rest of 'em included!

In my opinion, neither the makers of HD-DVD nor Blu-Ray has got the next-gen technology correct.

TTFN

DigitHead

Comments on HD DVD player sales reach all time high

Joe

The PS3 was hyped just like the PS2 was when it came out, but once again sony has over promised and under delivered.

1. Price is WAY to high for a game system...especially because the games are NOT better than the 360's. For $600 AND a year later the games should blow away the 360's...but the can't even match them. I'd rather have a dedicated movie player...as they display movies MUCH better than consoles.
b. HD-DVD movies actually LOOK better than Blu-ray movies...
c.
