If FOX really got HD, the US GP would be in HD today
While some networks seem to lead the way in HD, -- like CBS producing the very first NFL game in HD almost 10 years ago -- other networks just can't stop dragging their feet. Sure FOX shows up sometimes, -- like producing 6 NFL games a week in HD, even if they don't look that great -- but they still confuse consumers with their "FOX Widescreen" and there are still many events that deserve the HD treatment, but don't get it. Sure F1 racing isn't very popular in the US, but it is just a kick in the head to every US F1 fan when FOX **UPDATE** FOX did step up and at least present the race in EDTV, which we are grateful for, but it still isn't HD -- lucky for us, the US Open is.

When Directv gets 100 HD channels I'll be dropping the few remaining shows I'll actually watch in SD.
All that does not mean didilly if your local broadcast is still i480
Why waste money on something you are getting very little revenue out of in the first place? I haven't heard of this race before and wouldn't know anything about if I didn't see it here.
yeah, formula one racing is so obscure, no one knows anything about it!
with the name t-bone i guess i wouldn't really expect much anyways.
It's the Widescreen feed. :)
I noticed, that myself, and updated the post.
Thanks for the tip.
If I am not mistaken, Bernie "the Gravestone" Ecclestone controls ALL FORMULA 1 FEEDS (all things F1, for that matter)- including the feed used by SpeedTV (hence Fox). Bernie isn't transmitting anything F1 in HD yet (he says, "this year"), so if you want to bitch, bitch to King Bernie. Fox has little or not input or control over the feed, and if you watched the races you would know that (often commentators are caught off guard when a camera switches to some odd scene).
And here is the source:

i work for dtv and i have fox in hd. but its not really hd. the classify a channel as hd it has to be 16:9 but its broadcast in 4:3. i know alot of things that they say but is not true. have a ? just ask
Saying the U.S. Open is in HD is a huge stretch! There are so many non-hd cameras covering the event I'd say almost half ISN'T is HD! Great job NBC!
Yeah, it would be great that if the source is HD that we'll get in in HD. But what Fox offers for football is 100% better than CBS only offering 3-4 games of the NFL in HD. Just because CBS did it first doesn't make them the best.
I have DTV with NFL Sunday Ticket, CBS is worse. CBS only offers their National Games in HD. One East coast, one West coast AND maybe one other. And NFL is SO MUCH more popular than the F1 you're whining about.
Good point. Not having all of the NFL games in HD is criminal. I think I recall an article on here a few months back that said the NFL instant replays will be in HD starting in 2008. This implies that all the games will be in HD by then too. I think CBS is going to offer 5 or 6 HD games per week this year versus the 3 they offered last year.
I found the widescreen ED broadcast pretty enjoyable, seeing that it really is quite close to HD. Sure, real HD would be nicer, but I'm not going to complain about coverage that looks fairly close to DVD quality.
B.D. Ize is correct. Formula One management controls the F1 feed and sells rights to various broadcasters across the world. SpeedTV (Fox) is the exclusive broadcaster in the US, but they have no say over the definition of the feed that they received. Though, the FOM feeds are in widescreen, so at the very least Spped/Fox should continue to broadcast it in that format, instead of cropping it to 4:3. I would love to get F1 in HD. *sigh*
I was at the race, it looked like it was in HD.
Fox isn't the only people that do EDTV....remember the World Series? Gotta love EDTV....How about the recent nba finals when ABC decided to go EDTV with their moving court camera? Sure it may not be that noticeable...but damn this is the world series and nba finals, never mind the f1...
