Sony PS3 1.90 and PSP 3.52 firmware updates ready to download
Get your software update on kids, Sony's latest firmware is available now for your Sony PS3 and PSP rigs. While the PSP pulls a minor 0.01 update offering a boost in both security and playable network titles under [Game], the real sauce comes by way of firmware 1.90 for the PS3. Custom photo wallpapers for the XMB, messaging emoticons, AVCHD video playback direct from Memory Stick or camcorder, DMB sorting of hard drive-based games, upscaled CD audio over HDMI or digital optical outs, and a new forced 1080p24 HDMI output for Blu-ray films. Best of all perhaps, is the new "eject disc" option from the controller to keep your lazy meat sack planted on the couch just that much longer.[Via Joystiq]

"Get your software update on kids"
on my PSP? ARE YOU HIGH?!?
I like my new wallpaper on my PS3 :) When are they allow playing DIVX !!!
If your smart enough, it's aleady possible in 2 ways.
1/ boot linux
2/ DLNA and transcode across network
@Mak
It was possible on the PSP back when 1.5 was the only firmware too, but why complain when there is an easier way?
Is it because you need such a big ego as payback for getting a PS3?
@Mark
I got Linux, but playing DivX through HDMI, the quality is crappy. For the DNLA, my network is wireless, so it looses connection continuously...
Reading Divx directly from XMB is a MUST !
Carlson: Heeeeessss Hiiiiiighhhh!!!
Got it. Now I just gotta go find me some 1080p Jessica Alba pictures to match my 360's background...
Any word on updated compatibility list for Euro PS3s?
What games are not working for you?
I have no problems with my PAL console, 100% of my PS1/PS2 games work perfectly.
@Mak,
I haven't got it yet, but there were a couple of games notably missing from the compatibility list, and one of my favourites, GT4, is listed with "Noticeable Issues". When they sort that out, I'll get it.
Hrmmm... I thought I was already able to playback AVCHD movies directly from my SR1 when I connected it to the PS3 before this patch?
"Best of all perhaps, is the new "eject disc" option from the controller to keep your lazy meat sack planted on the couch just that much longer."
Wow, more reason to be a couch potato
i doubt it, u still have to get up to get the damn disk, and no bluestreak fans out here? boooooooo.
If your even bothering to watch DivX, then you have no reason to comment on quality. DivX quality is dire.
Better encode all your content to H264/AVC ane be done with it, lower file sizes, higher quality, PS3, 360, PC compatable.
No custom in-game songs?
The PS3 already supports custom soundtracks. It is up to developers to add it to their games. A PS3 game that supports it is Mainichi Issho.

=> Well, I use DivX cause I have a large collection and I think the quality is pretty good most of the time! You don't like DivX ? Fine, I don't give a crap. But a lot of people like DivX and Sony should consider it.

=> Also, it's pretty annoying to have to convert movies to play them... "plug and play!". Sony is trying to make the PS3 a media center, so it should support more formats and make life easier to consumers...
(Finally, I really don't like you one!)
No, it is the other way around. DivX should support the PS3 or in other words: the h.264/MPEG-4 AVC international standard. If you want to use DivX's container format, that's fine. But, don't expect Sony to support a non-standard format.
any ideas where I can download this update via my work pc (to usb flash drive) as I'm currently broadband less due to moving?
Chezz
From the PS3 website.
they were not showing the new version early at lunch, just rechecked and it showing now! DOH
Am I the only one that misses the days when you bought a console and it didn't need firmware updates? you just bought it complete from day one...
I am getting old...
Yeah!!
Screw enhancements and added functionality.
Well, back when you bought, say, a SNES... you could only choose from a VHS tape format if you wanted to watch a movie. The SNES didn't play VHS tapes, and so it was basically feature complete with no further possibilities. But when you are talking about digital video, there is so much variation in formats... it's not as simple as it used to be. There are many codecs and new stuff happening all the time. But then do you really want to go back to 16 bit games (dont get me wrong, i love them too, but not exclusively) and VHS tapes? Firmware updates are necessary to keep pace with digital. We didn't used to have them because we didn't have any technology.
I hear what your saying McHoffa. But those were different days. Everything was pretty much etched in stone (or ROM chips). I don't really see anything wrong with what is happening today.
Someone releases a game and has an idea for something else. We don't have to buy a new game. We just download the additional content.
A company releases a console and has an idea for more functionality. We don't have to wait for the next version of the console.
There have been a few patches in the updates for both Sony and MS. But the bulk of the updates have been additional features. And I have no complaints about that at all.
Chezz. Here's the page about updating via USB: http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Network/Updates/pc_update.html#update_PC
and here's the actual update to d/l: http://dus01.ps3.update.playstation.net/update/ps3/image/us/2007_0628_25de800491e8e88104d7e30b7524e9dc/PS3UPDAT.PUP
But seriously, are you really just trying to talk smack? or was that a real question?
Is it me or is the ps3 getting blurry? Using it on a crt rear projection at 1080i. My hd reciever seems fine, but ps3 is just dull looking now with 1.90 upgrade.
OK so can someone explain to me where they are getting content in DIVX format, why and why the need to reconvert formats ? Is this DVD piracy ? Pr0n ?
Seem to have missed the boat on all this transcoding stuff. Whats wrong with popping a DVD into the drive ?
Gonzo:
I almost didnt catch that one...
... and then he said that I was ugly and that I couldnt read good...
