The SNES didn't play VHS tapes, and so it was basically feature complete with no further possibilities.  But when you are talking about digital video, there is so much variation in formats... it's not as simple as it used to be.  There are many codecs and new stuff happening all the time.  But then do you really want to go back to 16 bit games (dont get me wrong, i love them too, but not exclusively) and VHS tapes?  Firmware updates are necessary to keep pace with digital. But those were different days. Everything was pretty much etched in stone (or ROM chips). I don't really see anything wrong with what is happening today. <br>Someone releases a game and has an idea for something else. We don't have to buy a new game. We just download the additional content. <br><br>A company releases a console and has an idea for more functionality. We don't have to wait for the next version of the console. <br><br>There have been a few patches in the updates for both Sony and MS. But the bulk of the updates have been additional features.
