I think Warner is losing out on the HD DVD side because of the higher price of these discs. Every other movie you can find them for equal price. Cheap players, but more expensive disks. Since the disks are apparently cheaper to make they are making more profit off them allowing them to further lower the cost of players. They can't turn a profit off hardware because they have to subsidize it to compete with Toshiba machines.

Blu-Ray has more expensive players, but allot of new release disks are being released at the same price as the DVD version and older movies are only a couple dollars more then the DVD.

That's good strategy as it probably encourages a few PS3 owners who otherwise wouldn't to pick up Blu-Ray disks because the cost is comparable to the DVD version.

These DVD/HD-DVD combo disk packs that cost up to ten dollars more then the regular DVD version of the movies are not helping the HD-DVD cause.

What's the point of a cheap player if you're going to get nailed on the media later on?

KC

Comments on Blu-ray has outsold HD DVD so far this year

Wasn't it 4 to 1 not too long ago?

Isn't the attach rate much better on HD DVD, what with the 3 to 4 million PS3s out there?

And the price difference is mostly because of the dual format DVD/HD DVD combo discs. Combos are $5 more.

So, let's look at the numbers. The cheapest (current model) BD player is $500, and the cheapest HD player is $300. At $5 each, you would need to buy 40 BD disks to match the price difference. And only your BD purchases that matched HD combos would count. There are simply more titles on Blu Ray.

I have purchased a few SD discs since the purchase of my HD player, either because of cost (didn't like it enough to shell out the cash) or availability. I've rented more than I've bought, and that number is only so low because I can't find all the HD DVDs that I would rent.

2. HD DVDs have a higher profit margin.

HD DVDs use the same manufacturing process as standard DVDs, and actually cost less materially to manufacture. My Dad's company replicates digital media, and they are going HD DVD because the cost and process adjustment are much more affordable than those for Blu Ray. They will eventually go Blu Ray also, but it is such a specialized process requiring so many new machines, they won't until it absolutely covers their costs to do so.
What I'm trying to say is, even though we are being routed in terms of sales numbers, if the format is sustainable (and I've demonstrated that it is in other posts), the enticement for studios to go dual format will be huge when they realize Warner made as much *profit* from both formats, even though the numbers were so much lower for HD DVD. Blu-Ray costs production costs are coming down to DVD level much quicker then they would if PS3 games were in DVD.

PS3 is vital to Blu-Ray on many levels as every PS3 owner whether they have purchased a Blu-Ray movie or not is an investor in Blu-Ray technology and a purchaser of Blu-Ray disks.

For all the Sony bashing that goes on on the Internet, it's not like they didn't have a complete strategy for Blu-Ray before they decided to launch it.

If Microsoft had decided to hold off on launching the 360 and made all games on HD-DVD there'd be a much weaker case for Blu-Ray being a new more expensive technology to produce. But with Blu-Ray leveraging the game market to ramp up disk production (and attract more disk manufacturers to invest in Blu-Ray) and drive down costs with the competition relying pretty exclusively on the Home Movie market, there is a strong case to be made that Blu-Ray simply has the better economies of scale for long term success.

KC

Comments on Blu-ray has outsold HD DVD so far this year

News Flash: Nintendo has declared victory in the 2007 console wars, as its Wii has summarily kicked the buttocks of the Xbox 360 AND the PS3, despite promising, face-melting HD demos like Stranglehold (sick) and Bioshock (sickerer) on Marketplace right now, suckers!!!

Hee, hee, just thought I'd behave like a mischevious imp for a moment. I myself and happy to see these statistics, because I own a PS3, but have nothing against the 360. I may be entirely speaking nonsense and makes false assumptions, but this may still be a source of the argument.
I read earlier on this site that the PS3 is just a tool to further the HD sales, and, ultimately, to promote their own disc format. So, to whoever wants to see sales outside of the PS3, I would see this as fruitless because a large part of the system's current existence is due to blu-ray promotion. Engadget has also posted statistics referring to the actual use of blu-ray on the PS3 system, which, I believe I read, is around seventy percent (and, while the numbers may be botched a little by staticians, I doubt they would be off by plus/minus five percent, due to blatant legal issues.)
So, what I am getting that is a lot of the debate contained in this forum is fairly pointless. PS3's are blu-ray players, significantly boost the sales of the format, and taking them out of the equation wouldn't do much good. This battle isn't for sale of players, but rather for media endorsement into the discs (although players do dictate sales.) All I hope is that, with the continuation of blu-ray's dominance, i'll be able to buy Kill Bill soon for a nice, affordable price :D
And, I have to admit, I just love the PS3, and would hate to see it flop.

Joe H

Comments on Blu-ray has outsold HD DVD so far this year

Not for long, with the news Hd Dvd has gained the extra studio support, makes you blo ray fanboys look like knobs, hahahahaha

nigel

Comments on Blu-ray has outsold HD DVD so far this year

I think more people are renting blu ray movies than hd dvds.
