Unless you've been living in a cave. Unless you have a H20 or HR20 Receiver you will not get any of the new HD Channels. Call DirecTv NOW to get a new receiver.
Griff - you would be correct. All the new HD channels are going to use MPEG-2 compression therefore any existing decoder whether it is a Tivo box or an old DTV receiver will only receive what is already being broadcast. Direct has been on a pretty active campaign to get everyone to upgrade their equipment, including adding the new B-band converters for the new sat transmissions listed above. Sorry to burst your bubble but I've also had to relegate my Series 2 box to the closet and replace it with the new DTV HD DVR. To be honest, the only thing I really miss (besides the way that remote fit my hand!) is the layout of the programming grid. They've had enough updates to where the HR-20 functions pretty darn smooth now. With the exception of a few minor quirks, I'm satisfied with how well it performs in my system.
After looking over this list, I think it is fair to say that DTV will OWN the HD market once they all come online. Admittedly, there are some locals listed but for the most part, this list will really round out their HD offerings - much more so than Comcast or Dish for certain. The best thing is, this is only the first round. With all the updates and changes DTV has made (or invested) for their future business, they alone are set to go ahead. Dish is adding channels, yes BUT they haven't laid any sort of groundwork for true expansion. My parents have Dish and hell, they don't even get their locals included in their HD package yet. I've got DTV and enjoy everything except NBC and CW via my sat dish.

Who gets to see the RSNs? I live in NC but I follow the Cleveland Indians on MLB Extra Innings. Will I get to see the Indians home games, which are all broadcast in HD on STOHD? This would be quite awesome, if so.
No blackout rules still apply for Professional games so you wont see these. However, the channel itself will be available to everyone when these events are not broadcasting!
So if I live in L.A. would be able to get YES HD?
Thats correct! You just won't be able to see thee Yankee's games or Rangers games due to regional blackout laws!
for whatever reason, last night Yankees game was not blocked out for me on the hd channel...anybody know why this occasionally happens?
Also, saw a channel listed simply as NHL...any chance this of the NHL channel that is supposed to go live within a month? I hope so!
You could watch the Yankee game last night on ESPN2HD which is a national broadcast. The only people who weren't able to watch it on ESPNHD2 were the people in the Red Sox & Yankee regions as they were blacked-out on ESPN2 and broadcast on NESN & YES Networks instead...

Does anyone know when these new HD channels are going to be avaialable? I joined DirecTV only because the promise of them having the most HD content.
I got a follow up call today from DTV to verify that my BBC was installed correctly and that I could view Ch 499 properly as a result. I asked them what the roll out date for the new channels is and they told me Sept 30/Oct 1. If this is correct, it sounds like it will be another month rather than the two weeks being speculated here. Time will tell!
People keep mentioning 9/15 as the launch date for up to 40 new HD channels on day one.
Since this list is for around 70 channels, it's likely that the remainder will roll in as they go online. Some of the channels listed are not even on the air yet. But no one really knows for sure at this point ...

More correctly, you need an HR20, H20 or the upcoming HR21 and H21's to decode the new channels. YOU ALSO NEED a 5-LNB "Slimline" dish to get signal from the new satellite (DirecTV 10) as it uses a different broadcast band. The new dish will also work with older equipment. You will also need B-Band converters hooked to the new boxes to unstack the multiple frequencies from the way they are sent down the cable.
(Note: If you currently diplex OTA signals on your downlink cable, you will have to change your configuration, as you cannot diplex on any cable going to a new receiver.)
All of these, and installation, can be had from DirecTV. The price varies from free to a couple hundred dollars depending on your history with the company and your negotiating skills.
DirecTV has promised that there will be no fee increase (currently $10) for HD access. At least not right away....
Well i don't see a reason to drop my HD-Tivos for the MPEG4 stuff. Then again, the only channel we watch on that list is the NFL Network. The rest is just garbage. We already had Discovery in HD and HBO is in HD for the stuff we record. No thanks. I'll avoid MPEG 4 for as long as possible.
I really wish DTV would allow for ala carte ordering. HBO, NFLN and Discovery is all I need or want from them. I can record OTA the other stuff I want.
Well it's only $10 extra to get the HD version of every SD channel you already subscribe to (excluding premium channels; those HD channels are part of your premium subscription.)

Well DISH Network has launched The History Channel HD today! What happened to Directv's press release in May stating that they would be the first to have that channel available? This is not looking good! DISH has 39 HD channels now! Have I made a mistake?
