That's all I've been asking for - equal coverage without negative slants on positive news.

Back on topic -- this is the second framing issue I've seen in the past week -- BioShock (game for PC/360) actually cuts off the top and bottom 10% of the picture compared to the 4:3 picture. Yes, if you play BioShock on a 4:3 display you get to see MORE than if you play on a 16:9. Stupid. PotC is similar, except worse since it cuts off valuable information (like his head....), whereas on the game you only lose the ceiling/floor at least...

I guess I don't understand why this stuff is so hard... :(

Xyzzy

Comments on Blu-ray's Pirates of the Caribbean release has framing issues

No, I'll blame this on Blu-ray and the BDA. That is what essentially Blu-ray has done. They came to the market early well before they are complete and its just one thing after another of embarrassment. The demo disc, the 5th element said to look almost worse than an upconverted dvd, had to be remastered, disney's biggest release cutting peoples heads off with framing issues, no PiP, no BD-Live, horridly expensive players, studios bailing on it, what is next? Vista was released and XP was pulled to promote Vista only but it has had so much problems that XP is back on shelves and offered on new laptops and computers again until the Service Pack 1. If you ask me, Blu-ray is in dire need of a damn service pack! Thanks HD DVD for being a complete format and not beta testing your audience!

Kris

Comments on Blu-ray's Pirates of the Caribbean release has framing issues

kris youre my hero.u are so right every girl that has blo cut is a ginny pig.

will

Comments on Blu-ray's Pirates of the Caribbean release has framing issues

Reading these reviewers is like listening to a 4 year old speak....lets learn how to spell and what the definition of an analogy really is.

likuid

Comments on Blu-ray's Pirates of the Caribbean release has framing issues

Kris:

Ahhh, here we go, veering off too far down the rabbit trail. Universal has had many SD problems of their own, going back to the BACK TO THE FUTURE set and AIRPORT 1975. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are just mediums. If you know anything about how disks are produced, you'd know any framing issues are to blame at the start of the process, not in the final mastering of the disks. Someone slipped up in creating the files that then went to the Blu-Ray duplication facility. They only master what's been given to them, so don't blame the format. This format is often used to shoot "cinemascope" widescreen films (2.35:1 approximate aspect ratio) without using the anamorphic lenses that stretch an image to fill the 35mm (1.33:1 aspect ratio) frame.

What the issue here, is does the DVD show what the director and cinematographer intended? Generally you follow the "rule of thirds" when composing a shot -- you want a person's eyes in the top third of the frame, you certainly don't want their head obscured unless it's for a certain effect. More picture information is necessarily better, what you want is the correctly composed frame to be displayed theatrically and at home.

I've seen films in the theaters that were displayed without the proper matting to crop from 1.33:1 to 1.85:1, and films where the projectionist misaligned the frame, neither is a good experience. (FTR, Art School Confidential, when seen without matting, can be easily referred to as "Boom Mic Confidential," but thankfully I can say that seeing Christopher Lloyd's head cut off by bad projection in "My Favorite Martian" didn't hurt the movie.. it was terrible any way you sliced it).

The comments on Bioshock don't really apply here either; that was clearly a design decision on the game development end. Film and video games are very different mediums.

Disney needs to redo this transfer and exchange discs - Universal had a very similar screw-up with the DVD edition of one of the Back to the Future movies on the first run. It's not something that should slip past whomever is doing quality control. Unacceptable on any format.

Jim F

Comments on Blu-ray's Pirates of the Caribbean release has framing issues

Ouch - that's one hell of a screw-up by the encoders. While it isn't really related to Blu-ray it is still a black-eye for the format as the general public isn't so logical about guilt by association. A lot of people will see it as "That screwed-up Blu-ray release." I do think Disney will fix it, it is too high profile not to - and knowing the US there is probably a class-action lawsuit brewing right now. ;-)

MegaZone

Comments on Blu-ray's Pirates of the Caribbean release has framing issues

By the way.. it seems like many of the people who speak the loudest in criticizing one format over another either don't even have experience with either of them, or only have experience with one or the other. Let me just say, both formats have their advantages and drawbacks. I think HD-DVD would be a perfect medium if it was a little bit speedier (I use the 360 addon, so I don't know if the Toshiba players are faster) and didn't shove the combo discs down our throats.
