NFL fans have known for some time that this was the year that
CBS was doubling the number of HD games per week, but now the Tiffany Network has announced that starting September 15th, they'll also be producing all of their
SEC college games in HD.
CBS has always been known for the top notch picture quality -- local issues aside -- and as one of the biggest HD proponents, but recently they've taken a lot of criticism over the fact that they only produced three NFL games a week in HD, when
FOX was doing five. Since many HD fans just recently joined the club, they weren't around for all the years when CBS was blazing the HD football trail while FOX was touting that their
FOX Widescreen was just as good as HD. Great job stepping up your HD football coverage CBS, now, about
Survivor.
The only reason Survivor isn't in HD is because CBS execs are a bunch of cheapskates worried about the "durability" of the hardware in the field. It's a bunch of bull. Look at what the cameramen and crews did on dealiest catch. They lose something like 3/4 of their cameras each season due to the elements.
Nice to hear this about CBS - they do the best job of all the networks with regard to quality and quantity of HD content in general.
Sports coverage in HD on Fox is still a joke - most of their baseball coverage looks like upconverted 480p, and their NFL coverage has been almost as irregular. Fox may cover 5 games in "HD" per week, but at least 3 of them also look like upconverted 480p. It really doesn't matter if they're transmitting the signal of 720p if the capture or processing chain has butchered the quality...
It's too bad because some of their regular programming ("House" and local Fox news) look pretty good...
Yeah the durability issue is such BS when it comes to Survivor. Survivor in China was a great opportunity to showcase the beauty of the country in HD. CBS has made oodles of moeny off of Survivor. Look at Ice Roard Truckers. It has 1/6 of the viewers Survivor has (so they are bound to make a little less in advertising) but it was filmed in HD in very harsh & remote conditions.
There is no reason that Survivor isn't in HD other than CBS and the producers of Survivor are to cheap to do so.
Ahhh, more HD glory for the greatest college football conference out there... :p
Being a Florida alum, I consider myself very lucky to have such top-notch coverage for my conference on CBS. Now if only we could get the local Lincoln Financial (formerly Jefferson Pilot) games to get broadcast in HD. Who doesn't want to see Vandy/Miss State in HD...? :D
