Yeah, this has been stuck in my craw for a while now, and I've been meaning to cover it in one of my episodes. What we need is an Ipod for your HT, and there's no real reason why we don't have one. While the new Ipod Classic gets a step closer with component out and 480p, we need someone give us 720p or 1080i/p. I'd even take something the size of the iTV if they gave real format support.
Understandably, the roadblocks are: processing power - Decoding 720p h264 takes some muscle. Doing it, and other formats well takes some finesse.
DRM-not a real roadblock, simply a self-imposed one by the MPA. Ditch DRM, and give us 1080p component out and digital audio. Would do wonders for the regular ipod while you're at it.
It's just frustrating how close the ipod comes. I can't believe there hasn't been more excitement over the component out for 480p on the new ipod...must truly be an HD world now.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
