Now that
Shrek the Third is an HD DVD exclusive, it appears Dreamworks Animation is taking the opportunity to throw in all new
HDi features. High Def Digest has the updated specs, which include advanced PiP features above and beyond those of previous HD DVD titles, as well as exclusive downloadable content such as a subtitle trivia and movie guide. It would be nice not to have this
format war at all, but increased support for each format's unique -- at least until the Blu-ray players are
upgraded -- features is a benefit.
Hopefully 1.1 or 2.0 will come out and be finalized soon so blu-ray isn't holding up out special features any more.
I don't need to say anything about this.

Yawn zzzzzzzz
Will def be getting this HD DVD :)
who the hell is honestly going to buy this POS of a movie?
I guarantee that no Blu-ray owners will buy it :) I also predict Zero sales for Transformers to Blu-ray owners...
Okay, yes, that was flamebait.
If this comes in a combo disc I'll actually buy it for my daughter.
I don't see the point in purchasing a cartoon in HD at all. Transformers I would buy in HD, but as for this it's DVD for me. I liked the movie (1 & 2 were better), but not worth 25-30 price tag or switching to HD-DVD from BLU-RAY!
Transformers, maybe....but nahh I'll just let my PS3 upscale it.
You're my boy BLU!
"Transformers, maybe....but nahh I'll just let my PS3 upscale it."
That's too bad. I bought the 360 add-on just for that movie, that and I got it used and cheap. It's a fine addition to play along with my PS3.
It's not like a simple cartoon though. There is a lot of texture in Shrek and many other 3D animated theatrical films that would look a lot better than on DVD. Shark Tale and Finding Nemo were aired in HD a few months ago on ABC and such, and they looked fantastic, there's no comparison.
"You're my boy BLU!"
Yeah, that movie isn't going to be on Blu-ray Disc either. Old School comes out on HD DVD on November 27th. Anchorman, too, same day.
One of my friends is going to get mine for cheap, since I got an HD-A2. I'm selling mine to him for $60 with a movie, just to get him started with Hi-Def. Who could say no to that deal?
I would be all over that deal!
Jack, I would have figured you would like this movie.
Troll, Oger... pretty much the same thing, right?
Again a movie I LOVED along with anchorman, but wouldn't buy it in HD even if out on Blu-Ray (which it isn't, damn Dreamworks). Gladiator, I am disappointed in though.
@ Kiwi616:
I don't know about that.. I tend to think cartoons & 3D animated stuff look much much better in HD.
Of course it doesn. Just look at Ice Age, Happy Feet, TNMT in hi-def..looks freakin' incredible.
It's absolutely ridiculous from Blu-ray fans to say that "it's ok to watch anything on SD DVD" after their purity concerns about somewhat lower HD DVD bit-rates and lack of lossless audio on Transformers.
Hypocritical to say the least.
Damn ogre drank the Kool Aid!

This article says the Blu-ray players are going to be upgraded. This is good news! Somebody was trying to tell me that my BD-P1200 would forever be unable to take advantage of the new format, which was worrisome, not only because I'd have to buy a new player, but also because if you can't upgrade the old players then the studios making Blu-ray discs would be very hesitant to develop content that couldn't even be played on most players.
So yes, definitely good to hear that Blu-ray players will be upgraded.
The price for the movie is the LISTED price. Who in they're right mind pays LIST PRICE? Go to Best Buy and pay the list price plus TAX, or buy from Amazon and pay $19.95!
Blu-Ray Specs are being Upgraded, there was nothing in the Article saying Current Blu-Ray stand alone players being able to be upgraded. In fact there's nothing in the Article about Blu-Ray. Again don't get your hopes up. For one thing, is there even the Hardware in your stand alone player to do Dual Streaming? Can't add what's not in your player. Better start saving some money for a new player next year if you want to view any of the new disc 1.1 features.
I'm not into Cartoons, I'll wait for Transformers. There's just so many great HD DVD movie releases coming out this year. Have to be a little picky.
What a shame. So what it sounds like to me.. is that whenever Blu-ray's spec is finalized, there will be a stigmatic mix of permanently crippled players like my own and a trickle of the newer players. Would it be far-fetched to speculate that movie studios may feel disinclined to go gung-ho with features that most people won't even be able to use? It seems to me that doing so would mostly just generate upset customers who feel cheated by features promised on their Blu-ray discs that they cannot access.
It's been a while since I've seen Best Buy charge list price, and that was for one particular distributor of obscure media. For sure, they are higher than Amazon, it's unlikely to impossible in practice for a B&M to compete on price with an internet warehouse.
If you want to know what list price is, go to FYE or the Suncoast/Sam Goody shops if they aren't renamed FYE now.
Personally i think animation takes the most advantage of Hi Def. Real life films seem to add to much grain. I dont see this in any animated films. Films like Monster house, Open season, etcv look amazing in hi def. Shrek 3 should be no different.
Who cares about HD DVD list prices!? Just rip 'em to hard disk... I mean make backup copies, hehe. I got a few Hitachi TB drives for $190 each, and with about 6TB of storage (most of it used), I couldn't be happier to 'borrow' HD DVD and BD content - thank you Slysoft ;)
fraggle.rock is the only smart person on this post. Now, if you just go out an buy a blue-ray burner then, after you rip your HD DVD to hard drive, you can burn it to BD and enjoy it on your PS3. Heroes rocks on Blue Ray.

Except, to rip a HD-DVD and burn it to Blu-ray isn't even cost effective yet...
Yep, pure genius!
