I paid exactly $231 for my HDDVD player(it wasnt used). It is a 1080p lower end model. It is very slow to turn on, and the menu is not responsive or crisp like its competitor. A few times, while watching an HD-DVD, the sound gets all crazy distorted and at other times it freezes up.
Toshiba is I think trying to saturate their market with their cheap players as soon as possible. But cheap is cheap. Sort cuts will be made to cut the price. I remember in 1990 a 4 head Hi-Fi VCR from a quality company like Mitsubishi was $499. Yeah, that machine could be had 12 years later for $179. But it was a cheaply made, almost all plastic, more noisy and not nearly as quality of a product. They have always been an excellent company with a number of cutting edge, innovative designs incorporated into their products. I've owned dozens of Toshiba products over the last thirty years and I would put their build quality at least equal to or superior than Sony, Denon and Pioneer. I've had more Denon and Sony equipment fail on me than I have Toshiba and I don't buy any of their low end stuff either.

My original Toshiba DVD player I purchased back in '96 or '97 was as good a product as money could buy and was purchased from a local high end store. As a matter of fact, it sat on the shelf right next to all the B&O, NAD and Denon equipment and it wasn't a bit out of place.
