I see no reason why it should be obsolete just because one format goes away. The person still get's to play the surviving format. And anyone buying a combo unit like this one will still have spent less than many Blu-ray early adopters.
The format war could end today and the movies I have on the losing format will still be able to be played. Nothing obsolete about that.

You're right, in 10-12 years, HD DVD probably will be obsolete and we'll have to buy new players.
