DVRs, Comcast launches TiVo webpage
It's no surprise that most people get their DVRs from their HD provider, when you consider how much cheaper it is -- not to mention easier. Of course the rub is that the the cable co's DVR leaves a lot left to be desired. Now after a very long wait Comcast customers in select markets can take advantage of the best compromise today. Of course the problem is that it isn't available to everyone, and how can you tell if you're one of the lucky ones? So in the hopes to get the word out, Comcast has created a new webpage -- where among other things -- you can check for availability in your area. The one thing that does seem to be missing is the price, which we've heard is about a $6 premium over the comcastic DVR.

I put in my Zip, but it is not available in the Ft Lauderdale, FL area. I could of guessed that, since South FL is the last area for every new product that Comcast has!
FAUguy, I know what you mean man. I'm in the boondocks outside of Chicago, and not only do we get a dearth of HD channels, we're also last on the list. Chicago could get new stuff, but we seem be in some sort of feature Bermuda Triangle.
No Comcast-Tivo in San Jose according to the website. I'm planning to jump to DirecTV anyways. It's kind of strange it's not available here since Tivo headquarters is 10 minutes away. Oh well.
No luck in Nashua, NH and New England is usually quick on new HD channels. Though the comcast tech in the Nashua office said he was running it on a DCT3416. Now which will be first my DCH3416s or my DCT3412 in the house?
Funny I am in the heart of New England where it claims TiVO is available and it says no, in fact I punched in a bunch of local zip codes and nothing.. typical.
I am in Lowell, MA and we don't have it here. Bummer. I was looking forward to hearing the "boop boop" TiVo sound.
I typed in a ton of zips in the suburban Boston area. Nothing. Can anyone actually confirm it is available in their area? I call shenanigans.
NE (boston) Tivo software update will be released in December. What that means is a tech needs to come to your residence and reformat your comcast dvr box.
Also:
DVR monthly fee is currently $12.95. Add on another $2.95 per month if you want the Tivo software on your box + $17.95 for the mandatory tech visit
No tech needs to come out.
November 12th is the date to look for.
ran a couple Portland, OR zip codes and its a no go.. hopefully we get it soon, when I first heard Comcast Tivo I was hoping for a entire new box that wouldn't suck so much
New England is getting it first - Boston area, NH, etc. That's the only announced deployment so far - any other Comcast areas are unlikely to see it before 2008, and the roll-out will be gradual.
As for pricing, Comcast reps have told customers it is $2.95 on top of the existing fees: http://www.tivolovers.com/2007/10/24/tivo-on-comcast-295-a-month/
I live in New England but Bristol and Burlington Connecticut dont have tivo dvr could someone put a map up?
"The zip code you entered does not appear to fall within an area currently serviced by Comcast. If this is incorrect, please contact us at 1-800-Comcast."
Uhhh.....
But I get screwed by Comcast's DVR weekly...
Someone needs to work on their wording... =)
It seems like the rollout is upon us. I got an email (I had signed up for being alerted) saying that Tivo on comcast is now available in my area. I live in Salem, MA - about 20miles north of Boston, and am not affiliated with Comcast in any way.
So I spent the last half hour trying to figure out how to get Tivo and return to DVR bliss.
Turns out, there is a $18 one time charge in addition to the $2.95 per month charge to get Tivo.
I think 3 bucks a month is very reasonable. And the 18 bucks one time charge is daylight robbery.
I am sick of Comcast charging me $$ for sending a tech to my home to plug in a stupid DVR.
I refused to buy the service for now as a matter of principle.
Let us see how long my resolve lasts!
Cheers, but at least it is getting rolloed out now...
I also got the email I live in Wrentham, MA 30 miles south of boston 6 miles from the SuperBowl Champ New England Patriots Stadium. Anyway, I tried to order it on line and saw the one time charge. I called the 1800 number and they agreed to waive the one time charge of $18 no questions asked. I have 4 TIVO boxes now 3 Series 2 and one HD box. It gets installed on Thursday the 10th of January 2 days away.
Stay away from this, it's horrible. It's so much slower than before and really adds nothing new other than the TIVO look and feel, which isn't that much better than Comcast's. Additionally, the Tivo guide that comes up as you switch channels takes up half the screen. This was my last attempt to get Comcast working for me, but their DVR service just keeps getting worse and the price just keeps going up, I'm canceling Comcast.
Got Comcast/Tivo installed a few weeks ago. You can read my full review here:
