Verizon's FiOS TV finally rolls into Pittsburgh
Nearly a year after Pittsburgh residents groaned as they watched FiOS invade Philadelphia, those in the Steel City can finally join in on the fun. As of today, Verizon's fiber-based television service is alive and well for thousands of southwestern Pennsylvania inhabitants. Reportedly, some 60,000 households in parts of 14 communities can now opt for FiOS TV, and for those not invited to the bash just yet, VZW also stated that it expected the service to expand to dozens more communities within the next several months. Moreover, folks that take the plunge can bundle up FiOS TV with a number of other Verizon offerings should they choose, and if you're overly curious to know precisely what areas FiOS is now ready for, check out the full list after the break.[Via MultichannelNews]
Verizon FiOS TV is now available in parts of the following southwestern Pennsylvania communities: (as of Nov. 8, 2007)
- Bethel Park
- Franklin Park
- Hampton
- Indiana Township
- McCandless
- Mt. Lebanon
- O'Hara
- Ohio Township
- Peters
- Ross
- Sewickley
- Shaler
- Upper St. Clair
- West View

Hmm, interesting.. The title is very misleading though, should be changed to "Verizon's FIOS TV finally rolls into Pittsburgh". I'm in Pittsburgh and I was wondering how the internet service just rolled in since I've had it for about a year.
Anyway, I can't wait to get FIOS TV now.
Finally! Can't wait to get rid of that comcast garbage
LIES!
I live in Franklin Park and would you believe this... HALF THE BOROUGH CAN'T GET FiOS!!!
Sounds ridiculous right? Wrong. North Pittsburgh Telco has been here for ages and the FCC granted them a monopoly clause (because they are small) so telecoms like Verizon couldn't move into the area and rape them. Well NPTC was just bought out by Consolidated Communications and I still can't get FiOS. Talk about a friggin' con job. I happen to live in the part of Franklin Park that is NPTC's territory. I'm stuck with Comcast. Fuck I hate where I live.
I've been waiting for FiOS for ages and I've been pestering our borough mayor for ages about this. I feel so betrayed.
I also live in Franklin Park....and have to deal with North Pittsburgh Telephone Co...I have Comcast Internet and TV, and have been hoping there would be a decent alternative some day...I guess not. NPTC's DSL Service 3Mbps is slower and costs more...I could go with Direct TV, but then any savings would be wiped out since Comcast will jack up my Internet service to $60.00 month if I don't also have their TV. All of my family and friends who live near me in Franklin Park CAN get FiOS...but I'm left out in the cold.
Signing up right now (Peters Township).

Just got the order placed:
Phone: Freedom Essentials (unlimited LD, etc.)
Internet: 5Mbit
TV: standard 200 channels, HBO, Showtime, Stars, Flix, Sundance
Set-top equipment: 2 cable cards (HD Tivo), 1 Verizon HD-DVR, 2 standard boxes
Price: 149/month
Savings vs. Comcast: at least $50/month, plus I'm getting more channels (all of my TVs get all the channels, whereas with Comcast I was only pushing the full lot to the HD set, trying to save money). I also get faster internet vs. my current 3Mbit DSL. I bet it won't take 2 hours to install 2 cable cards, either.
WOW. Screw you, Comcast.

I live in Peters Township near Hidden Valley Rd and although I know my street was due to get FiOS near end of 2007, it hasn't happened yet and I was wondering where you live and if you know anything about next areas or streets.
I keep seeing references in Engadget and EngadgetHD to VZW.
Is this short for Verizon wireless?
I do not think that the FiOS project shares much in common with the Verizon Wireless group.
Pfft...I live in Chicago...Damn you Comcast!
I’ll save anyone thinking of switching to FIOS TV alot of time and/or money… DON’T DO IT. We've had this service for about 9 months and has become worse with time (especially the new guide). For the time being, quality is better with other carriers, and don’t even get me started with customer service. At least 10 calls to Verizon in the past 4 months to clear up ONE seemingly simple issue.
You've described my dilemma perfectly. Going to DirecTV doesn't solve anything because then the rates get jacked up for cable internet. The DSL around here is slower and just as expensive. What I don't understand is why Verizon can't come to this area and just offer internet and FiOS TV access. Comcast does it.
Why on earth do we free citizens allow these corporations to have monopolies? Something tells me this is not the free market at work, but parasitic capitalism... .and we all suffer.
Of course, our politicians don't care -- they get fat granting and protecting these monopolies and, so long as they can tax it, they're happy.
