Blu-ray owners are more likely to be aware that building up a huge collection is really pointless when the next generation of HDM (likely 4K in 5+ years) will make their purchases obsolete and backwardly and downwardly redundant. Can't fool a blu-ray owner twice, so many of us prefer to rent most movies and only buy the ones we really love and that have high "re-watch" value.

Of course, that's just speculation, the real answer is probably that many PS3s were purchases by parents for their kid and they are not yet aware of or interested in HDM. Eventually, they will be, and they will want to use the machine they already own, particularly since these families probably want Disney/Pixar films in their collections.
