1) ALL Xbox360 HD DVD add-ons are used to play HD DVD discs, period.
2) NOT ALL PS3s are used to play Blu-ray movies.
3) Only 40% of PS3 owners actually know the PS3 has a Blu-ray player in it.
4) Not all of those 40% buy Blu-ray movies, or have an HDTV.

The story of HD DVD stand alones reaching 500k got a less hostile story at the bits... wow engadgethd is just incabable of saying something nice. I bet when HD DVD gets to the $49 price we will be told to spend the money on a blue ray movie disc...even if we don't own blue ray yet.

There ARE a lot of BD-active PS3s out there. Maybe 700K in North America (given the 1,750,000 players in North America according to Wiki, and estimates as high as 40% HD-connected). Those plus about 100K standalones have been beating up on the 500K combined HD DVDs up to now.

So Toshiba has to sell a lot. Staying even with Sony won't cut it unless they're playing to tie. They have to go for the jugular, not the capillaries. But even if that was true at the time of the survey and still true today, that's 2.4 million Playstation3 owners [based upon 6 million sold] that know their console can play movies in high def.

Let me repeat that... 2.4 million Playstation3 owners versus 700k HD DVD owners between stand alone Toshiba players and the Toshiba-built HD DVD add-on drive for the Xbox360.

2.4 million > 700k.

Toshiba has a long ways to go to catch up while hoping that the cheaper PS3s don't sell and nobody else buys a stand-alone Blu-ray player. I would agree with you on that PS3/Blu number. At best (or worse depending on how you want to look at it), my guess would have it at 20%. But you still have to wonder about some of these PS3 owners. It's one thing to have the PS3 and another to know that they have the Blu option and actually use it. Educated gamers like playing good games. They buy Xbox 360s. I would argue that the very reason the Blu-Ray features aren't utilized more is because many PS3 users do NOT have HDTVs. That's a guess though. Socioeconomic doesn't fly simply because you know that a Playstation fan is a Playstation fan -- regardless of their finances, whoever wanted a PS3 purchased one already or will.
Throwing "J6P" under the bus don't fly, either. Look at the way the lower to middle class is taxed in the U.S. There's a lot more "J6P" out there, and many of them want to have the opportunity to "keep up with the Joneses", sort of speak. If you want Blu to win so badly regardless of its "superior tech" to HD-DVD, you need "J6P" on your side whether you like it or not.

Of course, that's just speculation, the real answer is probably that many PS3s were purchases by parents for their kid and they are not yet aware of or interested in HDM. Eventually, they will be, and they will want to use the machine they already own, particularly since these families probably want Disney/Pixar films in their collections. ps3's should not count at all as BD players. We all know that only 100k BD players have been sold and each owner goes out each week and buys a copy of all the top selling BD movies. Then they burn them in a fire to make sure that they can't be resold cheaply. Great article that suggests that neither HDM format needs to necessarily replace DVD as the de facto home video standard in order to survive and even be successful. It seems likely to be the case that neither will replace DVDs, and that being the case, Joe 6-pack is not worth the time, effort, and money it would take to educate him re: all things HD and to then presuade him to throw away more of his non-disposable income on a technology that he can barely even comprehend, and more importantly, that he can appreciate or value.

THAT is why Joe 6-pack is irrelevant in the HD world, because he is always one format behind in the tech race. If anyone wishes to anecdotally disprove that statistic spread by Microsoft and Toshiba, just stand in the Blu-ray section of your local Best Buy or Frys and ask the customers buying the Blu-ray movies what player they own. Based on the stats, probably 70% - or more - are PS3 owners. It may be true that most BD movie buyers are watching on ps3. And with 300...even if all stand alone blue ray owners bought the movie it would still take more sales by ps3 owmers to get the record sales Warner had.

BUT...when looking at the data of PS3 owners...most do not use it to watch movies. It has been reported here on engadgethd 13% use it 40% know of it.

Again different pools of data..

No one is saying that you don't know that your ps3 has blu ray capability or that you know how to use it. Heck, probably everyone that goes to Engadget HD knows that their ps3 is blu-ray capable and is hooked up to some sort of hidef display. Also, people in the blu-ray section buying blu-ray movies are probably aware that their ps3 is blu-ray capable... just a guess.

We're saying that according to market research, 60% of people who have a ps3 are not aware that it's bluray movie capable.
