I would say that they averaged together the 90k and 160k to get 125k, 125k+300k=425k, then they just went rounding-crazy and called it 420,000 (maybe they rounded toward the even digits to make it 420,000 not 430,000).

I may just be a simpleton, but how does 300K + 160K = 420K?

The 420,000 estimated number is for Toshiba branded HD DVD standalone players only. They don't include the Xbox 360 add-on player numbers.
The total number of HD DVD players out there (stand alone and add-ons) hover somewhere around 700,000, I'd say.
